2-dose Fla. execution sparks criticism

STARKE, Fla. - Death penalty opponents criticized the execution of a convicted murderer who took more than half an hour to die and needed a rare second dose of lethal chemicals.

Angel Nieves Diaz, 55, convicted of murdering a Miami topless bar manager 27 years ago, appeared to grimace before dying Wednesday, 34 minutes after the first dose.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger said she doesn't believe Diaz felt any pain and had liver disease, which required the second dose.

"It was not unanticipated. The metabolism of the drugs to the liver is slowed," Plessinger said.

Diaz's cousin Maria Otero said the family had never heard he suffered from liver disease.

"Why a stupid second dose?" Otero said.

Gov. Jeb Bush said the Department of Corrections followed all protocols.

"A preexisting medical condition of the inmate was the reason tonight's procedure took longer than recent procedures carried out this year," the governor said in a news release.

A spokesman for Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, called Diaz's death a botched execution.

"They had to execute him twice," Mark Elliot said. "If Floridians could witness the pain and the agony of the executed man's family, they would end the death penalty."

That's what you think, crybaby. What about "the pain and the agony" of the victim's family?

Good point!

If Floridians (and the rest of America for that matter) could witness the pain and agony of murder victims and their survivors, then I think 99% of America would want to get medievel on these convicted killers.

Make it mandatory that that bastards MUST suffer with no possibility of a quick and painful death. No sympathy here.

Even worse, they didn't even sterilize the needle. Don't they know he could develop a nasty infection.

I think the real issue is why 27 years on death row?

Nitrogen Asphyxiation - painless, silent, cheap, no needles, no body fluids, no blood splatter. Just strap on a mask and and brain wave monitor. Wait till there is no brain activity for 5 min. Zip up the bag and ship out the door.

Wouldn't you just know it....I left my crying towels at home and now I'm really upset this guy got "juiced" twice. Did they charge him for the 2nd one, or was it "on the house?"

I have an idea, don't tell the killer WHEN the execution is, just grab him up one night and do it, just like the treatment the victim got - total surprise, and no chance to say goodbye or have a last meal.

27 YEARS! TFB if he died with a little pain...

I say call for a volunteer from the victim's family, give him/her a police billy club (aren't they designed to hurt rather than kill?), then put him a private room with the murderer bound and gagged, and then give him/her half an hour to do whatever he/she wants to the criminal.

Just shoot the SOB. One cheap round right in the head. Goodbye.

How about some kind of automatic death machine, strap the guy in a chair, have a dozen guns secured in some type of frame aimed and him and triggered automatically by people all over the US logging on to the internet and pressing a key or picking up their mail, etc.? Totally random.

What does it matter if we're "cruel" to vicious murderers? Who cares. Kill em all, the "liberals" or Cindy Shee-ham, ham, ham, bacon and Spam can sort em out. It's not like there's a shortage of murderers, etc. in the world. We wouldn't miss a few.
