Is there a difference between the AK ammo and .308 ammo?
Are AK's that accurate over distances?
Depends on the distance. A bolt action rifle is far more accurate than an AK. The AK uses pistol ammo (7.63x39mm) that has obvious disadvantages when it comes to shooting over distance.
I would take an SKS over an AK.
AK ammo is 7.62x39mm,7.62Nato/.308 ammo is 7.62x51mm the first number designates the bullet diameter, the second number designates the cartridge case length.
AK's are not known for sterling accuracy, but I can assure you that with decent sights (something they don't come with) you can hit a pie plate at 100 yards every time with a bad AK, and you can hit a coke can at that distance with a good AK. Occasional misses are allowed for bifocals ;)
Yep, AK ammo is 7.62 X 39 mm and is shorter and has less power than a .308 cartridge, which is 7.62 X 51 mm.
Essentially, an AK/SKS round is for short range assault work (100 hundred yards or less), while the .308 is essentially a reduced 30.06, for medium to long range shooting (200 to 800 yards)). There' s a whole, complicated story as to why the U.S. military dropped the .308 standard for rifles in favor if the 5.56 mm (.223 caliber), but that's for another thread:)
7.62 X 39 mm round
7.62 X 51 mm round (.308)
Besides that you can buy 1000 rds of AK ammo for less than $179 shipped, .308 (7.62x51) runs 3 times that price (unless you handload).
