A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 12.5.06

President Bush met with Robert Gates, his nominee to replace Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, before Gates headed to the Senate for his confirmation hearing. View brief webcast of Bush and Gates at WH today. The Senate Armed Services Committee voted unanimously (21-0) to send Gates's nomination to the full Senate; a vote is expected Wednesday.

Bush had lunch with James Baker. The much-leaked Iraqi study group report is scheduled for a full public release tomorrow.

The leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, met with VP Cheney. Tony Snow said today, "... as Mr. al Hakim noted, the sectarian violence has been going on [in Iraq] for 82 years [since 1924]."

Those who have followed this Bush family through trial and fatigue, through more than one attempt to steal an election, who have watched President George Herbert Walker Bush preside over an immensely successful family and know his deeply-held emotions and pride in his children, will understand why "Poppy" Bush broke up when speaking to Floridians in Tallahassee about the service of his son, outgoing governor Jeb Bush. Here's a link to the video. Pres. Bush 41 said, "The moral of this story is to serve with honor, and your governor has served with honor."

Click here to see Deck the Halls, and Welcome All, the WH web site with videos and information about decorating the White House for Christmas -- this year and back through 2001. Mrs. Bush said, "Roland, our former pastry chef, came back -- by popular demand -- to build a beautiful gingerbread house that all of you can see right here. If you look closely, you'll see that Barney and Miss Beazley are driving Santa's sleigh at the very top. Kitty is here, right underneath the birdhouse."

Mercy, this should read: "There are very few wars that ever get one won without some setbacks."

The problem you have is though especially after January with dem congress that a new minister has to get confirmed whereas in Britain the encumbent goes and the new appointee takes up the reigns immediately sometimes within hours or even minutes of the announcement.

So I would think that a Cabinet official would only be asked to resign if there were serious conflicts especially now.

I don't think Poppy should ever accept the request to eulogize anyone he is close to. It would be so hard on him.

Thank you for the lovely WH Christmas Dose! Stunning pics. I love the nativity scene in the East Room!

The Christmas photo is wonderful! Great gown Laura is wearing. The President looks so dapper...even if his hair is too short! ;*)

I think our founders were so unsure of what to do with a chief executive and power that they put into the Constitution that the Senate had to confirm those into office who would advise the president officially. It has probably saved us from a lot of unworthy, unqualified cronies and crooks being on the payroll when less-than-honorable presidents were in office, but in many ways it's a pain nevertheless.

Hi there JAN. Glad you liked it. The Christmas photos bring out the best at the WH, I think. Sort of makes it seem like that beautiful institution is truly "our" house when they put the Christmas shine on it.

I am sure it has its merits and there are times when I wish there were something similar in Britain but I suppose more than anything it just an alien system to me having grown up with something different.

I cannot imagine a Prime Minister having to get permission from Parliament on who he wants in his Cabinet - also of course we cannot have the situation where the majority party in Parliament is not the same party as the PM so the 2 systems are not direct comparisons anyway.

Got your Christmas shopping done?

Mostly :)

I've skipped the runaround at the mall and stores and done most of my shopping online this year. Now I just have to wait for the mailman to actually deliver the stuff :)

How's about you? Are you snowed in? :)

And our system results in a dreadful Push-Pull when the president is of one party and Congress is of t'other. It can truly get deadlocked, gridlocked, and very nasty, if the leaders of the opposition party in Congress set their minds and wills to thwart the president's agenda. This is where being a truly effective politician becomes a president.

I think Bush's words at the press conference the other day with Maliki fit not only how to deal with other countries, they fit his dealings with Congress: "Support reasonable people and reject extremists."

Oh...well, that too. I was just remembering how he got choked up at President Reagan's funeral. I love that he's so protective of his boys. It's really sweet.

Fortunately the snow is almost just a memory. There are a few patches where it's shady on the lawn here and there.

I am almost finished with my shopping, thankfully.

BTW, I have to get you a new loaf of Apple Strudel bread (NO COMMENTS!) because I had to freeze it, thought I'd be taking it out of the freezer after a few days, and then it was a few weeks, and I hadn't double wrapped it, and I had (HAD) to eat it to spare you getting potentially freezer-burned bread. BUT FEAR NOT, faithful FRiend! Costco has more! And I intend to reduce their supply for your dining pleasure.

Inhofe is waaaaaay cool. I was so happy to read that he's taking on the whole notion.

One of these days the media is going to wake up to the fact that the emperor has no clothes. And they are the emperor.
