TOKYO The new PlayStation 3 isn't all about entertainment.
That's the message Sony Corp. (SNE) is trying to convey in announcing that the new game consoles as powerful as supercomputers can help Stanford University researchers analyze complex human protein structures and perhaps find cures for cancer, Alzheimer's disease and other ailments.

If you buy a PlayStation 3 instead of a Wii, Christopher Reeve will walk again.
That headline is a bit overwrought, but it is true that the Cell processor is a pretty awesome bit of hardware.
A Playstation/Edwards ticket would be unbeatable.
My local WalMart has Wiis, but they won't sell them until midnight tonight. I don't understand why.
If I do end up buying one, will my puppy die??
No...but it will get a really bad case of worms....

Ping for Playstation 3 news.
Does anyone know who is maintaining the Freeper online gamers list? There used to be a list where people could exchange user ID's for online services such as XBox Live.
If you comment without reading the article, JimRob will cry.
I don't see OS X being loaded...
bttt
Well, if it is a Nintendog . . .
How about if you posted the article without reading it? (Not that I would do that).
You can't just look at those specs.
There are a few other things to consider. One is that the PS3 is VERY expensive to develop for, so you're going to see a lot of ports from the 360 to the PS3 instead of exclusives on the PS3 that utilize the PS3's awesome hardware. The other thing to consider is that the PS3 does not have a large install base at this point due to Sony's major manufacturing blunders, so developers are going to focus on the 360 and the Wii for games at this point.
Just commenting on the overwrought headline.
One of my older computers is participating in the program. This is just more SONY hype.
I think folks are in for a surprise when SONY crashes and burns this generation. They've had so many manufacturing problems this time around that the PS3 is TOO scarce. Sony loses money on each console, so in order to keep its gaming division afloat they need to make money on games. The problem is that with such scarcity the install base is too small for developers to make any money on the games they develop because the costs for developing for the PS3 are much more than they are for the 360 or the Wii. This starts a vicious cycle in which developers end up not developing for the PS3 and Sony's gaming division continues to lose money. Sony needs to get its act together NOW before it's too late.
