Democrats tap religious leader for radio talk

Democrats turned to an evangelical Christian to give their weekly radio address on Saturday, citing a desire to avoid partisanship after last month's elections that gave them control of Congress.

"I want to be clear that I am not speaking for the Democratic Party, but as a person of faith who feels the hunger in America for a new vision of our life together, and sees the opportunity to apply our best moral values to the urgent problems we face," the Rev. Jim Wallis said in his remarks.

Wallis, author of 2005's "God's Politics: Why the Right Gets it Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It," highlighted issues that he said required a new direction, including U.S. policy in Iraq. He also called for new efforts to combat poverty and protect the environment.

"We need serious solutions, not the scapegoating of others," Wallis said. "The path of partisan division is well worn, but the road of compassionate priorities and social justice will lead us to a new America."

In a statement, incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said he chose Wallis to give the address, usually reserved for politicians, "in the spirit of bipartisanship."

Wallis heads a ministry in Washington called Sojourners and has been widely viewed as part of the religious left. He rejects that label and preaches the need to bring the nation to "a moral center."

Reid called Wallis nonpartisan.

In recent months, Democrats have been trying to reach out more to the religious community in an effort to build up public support for their priorities.

About a year ago, Wallis was one of more than 100 religious activists arrested on Capitol Hill during a peaceful demonstration against health care and social welfare cuts proposed by Republicans.

If Jim Wallis is pro-life, I'll eat my hat.

The phonies are even consistently quoting scripture, sometimes incorrectly but it doesn't matter, the sheeple will buy it.

The dems have already infiltrated NAE (Nat'l Assoc. of Evangelicals) along with other national Christian organizations. They've been doing so for the past 40 years. Their goals?...among other things...to make abortion, gay marriage, acceptable norms within the religion while banning the religion itself in society

Yeah, Wallis pro-life. But he believes that if you think homosexuality is wrong then you're a scapegoater, and he wants to "broaden" the conversation. Never mind that democrats have found their wedge issue in embryonic stem cell research. As long as hotel workers are getting paid a living-wage, Wallis couldn't care less about the democrats position on life issues.

it really chaps my rear that dems are trotting out these religious figures now. After excoriating evangelicals for associateting with repubs, and warning us if theocracy.

One single question that demands an honest open and direct answer.
Do you hold every child's life to be important or do you support the murder of the unborn via abortion?
No political BS double talk and PC crap. Just clearly and precisely answer the question that has been asked.

Of course he's bipartisan. Sure! Harry Reid is known for giving the microphone to bipartisans. Talk about mixing up Church and State. It's always "different" if a dem wants to do something, for which they would flay a GOPer.

this is the sort of thing that really frosts my windows.

"I want to be clear that I am not speaking for the Democratic Party, "

Willis says this during the Democrats Response to the President's radio address.

Why all of the prefacing?

We both know why don't we Mr. Willis?

The dems plans include trying to neutralize Christians Righteous anger at the Democrat party's plans

Gay marriage, anti evangelical, no respect for God nor the family as God intended it to be.

Abortions for teens? Sure.

That's because evangelicals are suckers for it

They helped Carter and and Clinton win. They'll vote for Obama, too.

But they won't vote for a socially conservative Mormon. Nope. That's unacceptable to God.

That method is not far from the modus operandi of false teachers who use just enough Biblical truth to present an air of Christian legitimacy. Once the prey has been secured, the truth is discarded.

"I want to be clear that I am not speaking for the Democratic Party..."

He's not speaking for the Democrat Party, he's just giving their radio address. Typical Jim Wallis. And look at how the media reports this. Can you imagine the outrage if the Republicans had Jerry Falwell give their radio address?

I had a dog once that I taught to pray. I had a little cleric's collar made for him and even got a mail order license as a bona fide legal minister. I'd always trot him out at family functions and have him deliver the grace - it drove my Ma nuts. Anyway, that dog was every bit as much a genuine religious leader as Wallis. In fact, since that dog did exactly what his creator designed him to do, he was far more qualified to righteously lead any group than the imposter Wallis.
