Tom Tancredo is once again under fire for stating the obvious. This weekend our founding chairman told a group of conservatives that ``You would never know you're in the United States of America. You would certainly say you're in a Third World country.'' This should not be a controversial statement. In fact many of Miami residents like to brag that the city is the capital of Latin America.
Florida Governor Jeb Bush was offended by his truthfulness and called him Naïve. Bush said Miami is home to the best advanced placement programs in the country. These achievements are a far cry from the `ethnic enclaves devoid of any English' you mentioned in your statement. Tancredo noted that while there are plenty of bright talented students in Miami (just like there are in Mexico City,) that does not change the fact that there is a 45% drop out rate in their high schools. If this is what Bush considers high achieving schools, we are in trouble.
One way that Florida is looking like a Third World country with Enclaves devoid of any English is Jeb Bushs campaign commercials. In 2002, Governor Bush ran an ad that started off by showing seven Latin American flags. Nowhere in the ad was an American flag, any mention of the United States (or even Los Estados Unidos,) or a word of English. Another way America is becoming more like a Third World country is how the establishment tries to silence brave voices of opposition like Rep. Tancredo.
As Miami is becoming indistinguishable from the Third World, if we do not secure our borders, the rest of America will soon become indistinguishable for America.

Right you are.
Is there an election happening currently??
Are you saying no one is allowed to criticize any city with the truth because it might offend someone? A lot of the same people who did nothing but curse NOLA now defend Miami. Curious.
Is it Tancredos fault that the MAJORITY of illegal aliens are SPANISH SPEAKERS??? NO, it's the fault of people like you and JEB and George Bush who refuse to stop this lopsided invasion with your disgusting racism charges.
Miami is just a bastion of virtue!! And it looks like Miami has an illegal alien Cuban problem. It's even a "sanctuary city".
Immigration and the Alien Gang Epidemic: Problems and Solutions
In September, 2003, the Miami police arrested a Honduran visa violator for seven vicious rapes. The previous year, Miami cops had had the suspect in custody for lewd and lascivious molestation. Pursuant to Miamis sanctuary law, however, the police had never checked his immigration status. Had they done so, they would have discovered his deportable status, and could have forestalled the rapes.
The Miami Police Department will join with ICE only on high-level gang cases.

Gonzalez-Hernandez, 38, and Noel Lopez, 32, were arrested on Aug. 15 aboard a 25-foot boat after 20 Cuban nationals, including a pregnant woman and a 1-year-old boy, came ashore at the north end of the Judge S.S. Jolley Bridge at Marco Island.
They are charged with conspiracy to bring aliens into the United States. A subsequent indictment on Sept. 13 charged the men with "knowingly and willfully" bringing illegal aliens into the U.S.

Two leaders of a nationwide employee-leasing conspiracy, that leased out hundreds of illegal aliens throughout the United States, pleaded guilty before US District Judge Kenneth Marra in the Southern District of Florida, while a third defendant was sentenced, according to the US Justice Department.
"In using illegal aliens to generate their profits, the defendants not only took advantage of these individuals, but also potentially compromised the safety of our citizens," he added.
"In this case, the defendants laundered roughly $20 million and failed to pay $6 million in taxes as part of this illegal employee leasing scheme," said Julie Myers, Department of Homeland Assistant Secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"Should he have said such a statement in a crucial voting area for Republicans in Florida, Absolutely Not."
Oh yeah, let's worry about the elections NOW!!! Where was your voice when Bush was shoving CIR down the throats of the American people, REFUSING to effectively secure our borders, and DIVIDING the entire Republican party, risking and thereby LOSING MAJORITY, IN A CRITICAL ELECTION YEAR?????
As a Republican who's lived in Florida, I would have welcomed and celebrated the voice of any Republican candidate who spoke the truth and was willing to do everything in his power to secure our borders and prevent Bush's plan for shamnesty. The future of our country depends on it.
"For some reason there has been an enormous backlash against Tancredo on FR lately. I can't really figure it out, but alot of it has been nasty to the extreme. I may or may not agree with what he has to say, but the invective flowing his way is shocking to say the least."
It isn't 'enormous' really. Just take note that its the same group of freepers who attack anyone, including fellow freepers, who disagrees with Bush policy. Tancredo is just the newest addition to the hate list...though until recently, even I was unaware of the extremes some have gone to. I've read posts on here by freepers who won't even watch fox news or listen to Rush anymore, because they no longer listen to anyone who doesn't agree with Bush. It's all in this thread:

And we who have been deemed the 'single issue' voters, are being 'prayed for' here:

An interesting read, from a psychological standpoint, though I do suggest that if you chose to risk posting, you do so, 'in like'. Nothing else will be tolerated.

This isn't a racist issue, it's about America deciding who can immigrate here based on our need, not the need of the person trying to get in here.
Granted some seem to think bringing in millions of people who are illiterate will improve our country; I think bringing in people who are educated, and want to contribute to our society, would make a much better contribution.
Ding, ding.. we have a winner. Immigrate here, but conform to us not vis-versa. This applies not only to Hispanic immigrants, but to Muslim as well.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colorado, is pointing to Miami as an example of what he calls uncontrolled immigration. World Net Daily quotes Tancredo as saying, "Look at what has happened to Miami. It has become a third world country. You just pick it up and take it and move it someplace, you would never know you're in the United States of America." What do you think about the comments?

We do need to do a better job of enforcing our immigration laws, but that is about the only thing Tancredo is right about on this issue. Calling Miami a third-world country is an absurd statement considering Miami is one of the wealthier cities in America and has a better economy than any of Colorado's cities. Tancredo may also want to go out an meet some Cuban-American immigrants, and then you can make judgements about whether or not they contribute to American society. If he did he may be surprised to learn that they are as pro-business and as motivated to succeed and contribute as much as any other American ethnic group.
Tancredo's comments are similar to John Kerry's comments in the sense that they show a complete lack of judgement and political astuteness. First of all, you don't call an American city a third-world country if you want to be President. His lack of judgement is even more apparent because the people he primarily insulted are Cubans, who are a huge Republican voting block in a state that Republicans need in order to win any Presidential election.
Tancredo may want to go to Detroit or Richmond to see what areas in the United States actually have some problems. He may be shocked to see that the problems in these places are not caused by people who speak Spanish.
I don't like Bush's Amnesty one bit, but we have to go about Immigration Reform in a smart manner. Tancredo gets it, but he doesn't win any supporters but making excessively blunt statements such as this.
