British intelligence officials believe that al-Qaida is determined to attack the UK with a nuclear weapon, it emerged yesterday. The announcement, from an officially organised Foreign Office counter-terrorism briefing for the media, was the latest in a series of bleak assessments by senior officials and ministers about the terrorist threat facing Britain.
UK officials have detected "an awful lot of chatter" on jihadi websites expressing the desire to acquire chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weapons....
The warning comes after a speech last week by the foreign secretary, Margaret Beckett, on the terrorist threat facing the UK, and a rare public outing for Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, the head of MI5, who warned that there were at least 30 active plots to attack Britain.
With new counter-terrorism measures to be unveiled in tomorrow's Queen's speech, the weekend saw Gordon Brown back an extension to the time for which terrorism suspects can be held without charge, beyond the current 28 days....
For al-Qaida and jihadis, a devastating nuclear attack on Britain, not just the use of a "dirty bomb', would be part of the desire and agenda to cripple the west, sources said....
The network of the rogue Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, which is feared to have sold nuclear technology to Libya, Iran and North Korea, was broken up three years ago, but there are fears that other illegal networks may exist.
British counter terrorism officials believe plots they have thwarted and plots they claim are being hatched have strong links to Pakistan. They say hundreds of Britons travelled in the past year to Pakistan for terrorism activity, including training in camps and acting as couriers for messages. Officials also believe Britons are taking cash to terrorists in Pakistan.

Islam has the demographic bomb and that's all they need.
Great answer there NavyCanDo.
I don't think that message was sent loud and consistent enough after 9/11.
We needed to keep the momentum and the military going strong, the anti-US media and the democrats allowed the wind to be taken out of the sails of the most important war in history.
I'm afraid of the price we'll have to pay for the relentlessly liberal media and their democrat friends.
Let's go dig up Saddam's WMD arsenal in Syria. We got some time on our hands. Something to do, anyway.
I could live with that, too. ;)
Nancy may forced to take a position she can't stand....and hurt their 2008 chances.
I like it. No more "Mr. Sensitive Nice Guy." Dang, we're in a war! Bush needs to go back and read his speeches in the weeks after 9/11. When it comes to dealing with nuclear nutballs, I don't care if we make a few mistakes and take out the wrong city. The Cowboy needs to return. The Islamonuts see us as too politically correct and culturally bankrupt to defend ourselves, and so they're planning on walking all over us. I'd prefer it was them instead of us that gets thrown on the ash heap of history.
I agree. We have not done enough! And now it seems America does not have the balls to fight. So sad.
So, nuking mecca, medina, tehran, and where ever else the roaches raise their heads, would make martyrs of them.
Sounds like win win! They get to be martyred, and go to their heaven. We get a world free from mohamicidal murderers!
When do we start? 1 nuke, 2 nukes, 3 little mohamidans... 4 nukes, 5 nukes, glow in the dark mohamidans....
in a word SQUAT...
Here is what will happen, branch by branch...The Government, read the WhiteHouse will codemn it as an act of barbarity and will call upon all nations to join together to fight this growing threat. The State Department will ensure the phrase "Growing Threat" be used.
Immediately the Next Day, the UN will pass a resolution condemning Israel.
The Democrats, in the Senate, led by Harry Reid will demand an investigation. And want to know what the President knew and when he knew it.
Finally, Bush will make a speech to calm the nerves of jittery Americans. He will hit all the key words, extremists, religion of peace, hijacked by a few....
However, this is where it gets interesting...will his calls for restraint, in fact restrain AMERICANS who demand action? Methinks not.
This, like all other problems of a large nature, will need to be settled "in the streets" of Dearborn, Mich, and Paterson, NJ. Settled by pissed off Americans, acting with malice and justice in their hearts.
Its just time to deport the bastards....
End of Rant...
"What do we do when the first terrorist nuclear/dirty bomb goes off anywhere? "
Won't be to militarize our own borders, that's for sure.
I do like your solution, but would add flatted Damascus as well.
B-b-b-but! They're all moms and dads, Rosie said so!
"Try to pinpoint where Bin Laden and Al Zawahiri are hiding, and carpet bomb. Tell any nation harboring terrorists that they're next."
I like it! I would just add, AND THAT WE WILL ACT ON THE SLIGHTEST OF RUMORS.
The attack is to take down the current government and replace it with an Islamic one. With 25% already on board, it might just work.
What would the UK do?
Also, a nuclear terrorist attack would cause havoc in the world economy, possibly throwing many countries into severe recession.
And what would the liberal response be?
It's because of Iraq.
We should negotiate.
We should try and understand why they would go to such extremes.
Or, as Rosie Obese-al-donnell says: Don't call them terrorists. They are mothers and fathers just like us.
Funny you should mention Paterson.
My friends brother was in Paterson on 9/11 he called my friend because he was on the verge of committing murder, many people in the streets celebrating.
He called to vent and to be talked out of murdering people and going to jail for the rest of his life.
These are the stories that needed to be told regarding our immigration policies.
Paterson along with JC are complete Sh-Holes....
The Palestinians were dancing in the streets on 911 both in Paterson and in GAZA...Don't let ANYONE convince you otherwise.
