Corruption Case Resurfaces For Alcee Hastings

By Julia Malone | Friday, November 10, 2006, 11:06 AM

With Rep. Alcee Hastings a frontrunner to be House Intelligence Committee chairman, he’s already facing unpleasant publicity stemming from his involvement in a corruption case years ago.

The Florida Democrat, a former federal district judge, was acquitted of conspiring to solicit a bribe from criminal defendants in 1982. But after a jury found attorney William Borders guilty of being his co-conspirator, Hastings was impeached and removed from the federal bench by Congress in 1989.

Hastings then won a seat in the House of Representatives. Borders, who refused to testify against him in the bribery case, went to prison and won a pardon from President Clinton in 2001.

The case didn’t die there. Borders has twice petitioned the District of Columbia Office of Bar Counsel to reinstate him to practice law. His latest request went all the way to the Supreme Court, where the facts of the bribery conspiracy, the Hastings role and Borders’ refusal to testify were laid out once again.

The high court in September 2003 declined to grant a hearing on the Borders disbarment.

A friend just called and said she heard that Hastings would not be put in charge. Also, Harman would not be put in charge. Come on, RATS, eat each other.

IIRC, Hastings would have been barred from holding any federal office if the Senate had declared it when they removed him from the federal bench. Someone on the impeachment committee didn't think it was necessary. Hastings has been smiling since.

From Wikipedia:

"In 1989, Hastings was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives for bribery and perjury. The Democratic-controlled Senate convicted Judge Hastings of accepting a $150,000 bribe in 1981 in exchange for a lenient sentence and of perjury in his testimony about the case."

Taking dirty money? Perjured testimony? No wonder Clinton pardoned him!

Because the "standard of truth" applies to Democrats, none ever can be corrupt. "It all depends upon what the definition of the word 'is' is;" you must interpret the language in the manner most favorable to Democrats, even to the extent that "is" means "is not." Democrats cannot lie, cheat, steal, or take bribes because the hyper-flexible definitions of those words cannot match their actions.

Only way we will get rid of corrupt and/or stupid Democrats is when they inject embryonic stemcells in their brains and die of cancer.

When he was convicted in the Senate, they could have barred him from ever holding public office again. They chose not to do that.
