Why in Iceland do you have to "apply" to the government for land - can't you just BUY land? Why does the government have to "award" land to religious groups?

I can't answer your question fully. There is private private property in Iceland for individuals, but there is also some form of State support for recognized religions. I am not sure of the regulatory framework. Perhaps one of the Iceland FReepers can answer more fully. I have pinged one.
