Wikipedia has a good article on it. There are varying degrees of it but Somalians tend to perform the most severe types.
The aim of this butchery is to make sexual pleasure impossible for the female, ever. Urination is comromised. It even sex (and childbirth) dangerous because of the poor healing, scarring, and residual infections.
