Their desire for alliance with the US has always outweighed their few vocal dissenters. Same as it is with other allies.

"But get a grip. Look at the size of these anti-American crowds."

I agree...I spent three years in Korea, about half of that in Seoul (Yongsan). By far, most S. Koreans I met were grateful for the American military and loved America and all things American. A loud and boisterous minority loved to stir the sh!t-pot, but hardly represented the majority view of people I met there...get into the more remote areas, i.e., Munsan, Chun'chon, etc. and the support for the US grew even stronger.

I would love for us to have that much strength. Instead we always seem to help the ungrateful. Even if S. Korea is a really nice democracy and a really strong ally, the liberals there need to know that we are also their allies and it is not good to stab your friends in the back especially in a world this mean.

Are you the "Joe" to which a shrine on Hooker Hill is dedicated?

Has it occured to you that SK hasn't built their own nuclear arsenal as a condition for our protection?

I find it perfectly apropos that the crown atop Hooker Hill is Seoul's only mosque.

And now is my favorite time of year there.

A friend of mine was with the Battalion Scouts at Bonifas (where I met him). He was down at Yongson for a weekend and met the girl who later became his fiancee. She was an MP on duty at Gate Five (me pal goon, iirc) and he came rolling up @ 0200 with some floozie. She tells it..."He was drunk, with another girl and in my kill zone...it was love at first sight."

Yep...Seoul's mosque. I always called it "Allah's Kettle House." Korea is beautiful in Autumn, especially if you get into the more rural areas...picture on my profile (on the HMMWV hood was taken outside of Yoju in early November '96).

Japan should tell China in no uncertain terms that they have 30 days to take care of their Chia pet problem or they are fully arming themselves with thermonuclear weapons that will be pointed east north east

Make that west south west and we're cool. Otherwise you're aiming at US / Canada.

Untrue.

A real nuclear shield aimed at the arty positions along the 38th parallel would definitely stop any bombardment of Seoul...if used for fire suppression.

???

I made no comment in this thread about SK building a nuclear arsenal.

1. The article was about our protecting SK. I said we should protect them, even if they have been jerks.

2. As an aside, I said I thought we should make a move to offer missiles with warheads to Taiwan.

That might light a fire under China to place pressure on NK.

Worth repeating.

And we should tell China that if they don't get off their big red butt, we'll help TAIWAN to get nukes.

Bet there would be some sanctions with teeth, after that - like the red army rolling south.

We should heavily arm Japan then tell the Koreans (north and south) to go F#@! off. (Maybe I'd better go get another cup of coffee.)

Good idea.(the coffeee I mean.) With all due respect, I wouldn't be in such a hurry to "heavily arm Japan." They can revert to type just as fast as the SoKo's seem to want to. And their "type" hasn't been especially attractive, when the westernized overlay gets a bit thin.

Do you really think the Japanese have forgotten that we nuked two of their major cities a scant sixty years ago?

It was seeing these anti-american protest backs then that made me decide we should have just brought home our troops. I still feel the same.

Seoul which can be reduced to rubble in a matter of hours by all of NK's artillery positions currently honed in on it.

I hear this all the time and I don't believe it. We can do "Shock and Awe II" the length of the DMZ and shove all those "missiles" and arty back up Kimmy's butt before he gets off the second salvo. We can do it if we have a man in the White House instead of an epicene faggot, that is. Frankly, we're good till 01/09. After that... .

A country of over 40,000,000 and you condemn them because you see a picture of fewer than 100 protesting us.

If it is really 40 million to a hundred, then they certainly don't need us around. They can easily handle 23 million starving slaves by themselves, fat prosperous and healthy as they are... On the other hand, if those 40 million don't really give a sh8t who their ruler is, then --hey--they still don't need us around.

if you are a South Korean and want say a Harley Davidson that here costs $25,000, There you'd have to pay $100,000.

If you are willing to pay 25K for a motorsickle, then you deserve to pay 100K instead. The wages of stupidity is penury.

He has bunkers that can survive a direct hit from an 20 KT warhead. They've been digging shelters for decades in NK.

You know this... how?
