Germany was not in retreat, The Summer offensive starting with Barbarosa had stalled and there was retreat, however in 1942, Germany was back with a push toward Stalingrad.
Also, while North Africa and Italy were small campaigns, that and our bombing campaign took resources from the Russian front, that helped save the SU. Also, we provided millions of tons of military aid to the SU.

Why shouldn't we be proud of our victory over Germany? It was the defeat of an evil genocidal regime.
