Two teens accused of setting a 13-year-old girl alight and causing second-degree burns to her breasts were released on $5, 000 bail yesterday.

Th e two 1 5 -year-olds, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will be required to comply with release conditions. These include no possession of weapons ( notably incendiary substances like lighter fluids), no contact with the victim, a 9 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew, and counselling sessions.

HELD HER DOWN

Police said two teen boys held the girl down against her will under a bridge near K eelesdale P ark Tuesday, doused her shirt with lighter fluid and set her ablaze.

Police also seized a video camera which had allegedly been used earlier in the day when the teen boys set their own pant legs on fire.

The teens, cuff ed together at the wrists, were led into the Finch Ave. W courthouse and took their places in the prisoner's box, where they both stood expressionless.

Th e taller teen, wearing the same button-down shirt and jeans from the day before, hid his face behind long, dark bangs and hung his head.

His older sister wept quietly at the back as their mother addressed court.

Details of the bail hearing are banned under a court order. The second teen, a head shorter than his co-accused, stared straight ahead, avoiding the gaz e of his mother and stepfather.

Th e teens face charges of aggravated assault, mischief endangering life and assault with a weapon. Th ey are due back in court Oct. 27. Both accused and the victim attend Central Tech high school, where fellow students were angered by the incident.

'DISGUSTING'

"Th at's disgusting," said a Grade 9 student.

"A man hurting a woman," said another, smacking a fist into his other hand.

The anger was also shared by older students: "If I ever caught him on the street, and I knew what he looked like, the beating he'd have. I think I would have the right to beat the s--- out of him, no?

"I'd throw him a heavy beating," he said. "I don't care. I'd throw a heavy smash."

"They got bail?" asked Michael Teixeir a, 1 7 . " How much? That's it?"

He said they shouldn't have gotten bail, describing the alleged act as immature.

"I think everybody would think it's ridiculous, stupid," Creed Atkinson, 1 6 , said. "Stupid is one word to explain the whole thing. Th ey're looking for the wrong fame."

$5,000 dollars for this? I understand that that equals 50,000 bond in the US but WTF? They should not have been released period.

Real bright bulbs.

Glad to hear their peers aren't impressed with this. Sounds like they need to leave town when they get out.

When you set another human being on fire there is only one just punishment: Tall tree, short rope... and give the hangman enough time to draw a big crowd.

I believe this proves their guilt under the "liar, liar, pants on fire" statute.

I am still amazed by the extreme stupidity I engaged in as a teen, but setting my pants on fire, let alone taping it never occurred to me.

I am guessing, "He was a good boy. He never gave anyone any trouble. He was always home by 3am and his probation officer said he was doing well."
