Henry Luce used his own money to defend Whittacker Chambers from the defamation lawsuit filed by the spy Alger Hiss and after Chambers showed Nixon where he had hidden the 'Pumpkin Papers' in a hollowed out pumpkin in his pumpkin patch. Chambers was foreign affairs editor for Time Magazine but resigned to save the magazine any embarrassment about his spy dealings.

William Buckley asked Chambers to be a starting partner with him when starting National Review but declined for the same reason.

BTW, Chambers, Luce, Nixon and McCarthy (Joe) became close friends.
