The most major part of the solution has to be the idea of the neighborhood work site. We have to eliminate most of the commuting. Granted most people are not organized enough to work at home, they could damned well be working from neighborhood work sites that they walk to at least four days out of five. That, using electrons instead of most of the oil and rubber, would empty our highways of the present congestion and would bring ouor trade bills into balance overnight.

Good idea, but I don't know how we can truly implement it. I know myself, I'm one of those fortunate enough that work is only 3.2 miles away from me and I can take back roads, I can make a tank of gas last in my Explorer go for 3 weeks or more depending what I have to do. Agian, good idea, but we need to think of a way to implement it. The only solution I can think up is that we can "telecommute" as you pointed out. I remember back in the 1980's, the big story was that the microcomputer and PC will usher in a new "work at home" force. We see shades of it but not quite yet. I know in my work, depending when I'm doing for the week, it can be possible but not likely.

The idea would be for some company or companies to set up businesses which provide office services to other business including computers, network access, secretaries and whatever else, and let office workers work from those sites most days of the week.
