Vatican on high alert: Man who shot Pope John Paul II warns Benedict XVI

The man who shot and seriously wounded Pope John Paul II has warned Pope Benedict XVI not to visit Turkey after making comments that many Muslims deemed to have maligned Islam, the gunman's lawyer said Wednesday.

"As a man who knows these things, I am saying that your life is in danger, don't come to Turkey. I can't welcome you because I'm in prison," lawyer Mustafa Demirbag quoted Mehmet Ali Agca as saying during a meeting Monday at the high-security Kartal prison in Istanbul.

Agca speculated in a hand-written letter faxed to The Associated Press by his lawyer that the pope was pressured by secret services to make such a statement.

Agca called on Benedict, who is scheduled to visit Turkey in November, his first trip to a Muslim country, to step down as pope and return to Germany for a peaceful life.

In a Sept. 12 address at the University of Regensburg in Germany, Benedict cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as "evil and inhuman," particularly "his command to spread by the sword the faith."

And what makes him think that the Pope would ever be "safe" again? maybe there's some law in the Q'ran that we missed that says if a pope blasphemes allah, he must be killed. but if he steps down as the head of the Catholic Church, he may be allowed a peaceful life...

Having been to Rome and the Vatican, I can imagine that Swiss guards probably will have to run everyone entering St. Peter's through a security check similar to the one at airports. Also, on the day that the Pope comes out among the crowds in his Popemobile, in St. Peter's square, checking everyone for a suicide bomber will be very difficult.

The DUmmies would be in a state of ecstasy if The Pope were killed by one of the mohammedans. Most of the DUmmies are so rabidly anti-religious that anything that hurts The Church (any church) is a cause for celebration.

I sincerely hope Il Papa takes great care if he does decide to go to turkey, but I would also give him the same warning if he were to visit some of the more fervently liberal bastions here in the U.S.
