Just out of curiosity, are you in a "desirable" demographic? I would not be surprised if the New York Times is trying to boost numbers of certain types of subscriber that advertisers crave.

I have a friend who was receiving Newsweek regularly even though they didn't subscribe. This couple is very well off and donates heavily to the Republican party. I agree that a good share of these "freebies" are geared toward manipulating the "desirables."
