"Carnage and courage in Montreal"

"1 dead and at least a dozen others wounded before police cut short gunman's college rampage"

ANDRÉ PICARD
Globe and Mail Update
MONTREAL —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The gunman was not immediately identified, although police said he was born in the province of Quebec and lived in Montreal's North Shore. Witnesses described him as very tall, with spiky hair and multiple piercings. He carried a rifle and a bag with at least two other weapons, a shotgun and a 9 mm pistol.

Montreal La Presse identified the gunman as Kimveer Gill of Laval, north of Montreal. The newspaper published a photograph of Mr. Gill dressed in a long black trenchcoat and holding a long-barrelled gun. Police would not confirm the report.

La Presse reporters who went to Mr. Gill's house said they were met by his father who refused comment. He returned inside where the newspaper said he was being interviewed by police."

4- There were some predictions on how long it would take before we started blaming the Americans. Commenter over at small dead animals reported that Jack Layton, leader of socialist NDP party, blamed American guns.

MONTREAL SCHOOL SHOOTING: Sari Stein was in the area and has been live-blogging. "It seems from the initial reports that the today's episode bears more resemblance to the Columbine shootings and to the subsequent and oft-forgotten shooting at a high school in Taber, Alberta than to the previous Montreal shootings, but that probably won't stop anyone from drawing parallels and from suggesting that school shootings are something of an epidemic here in Montreal, despite the rarity of these episodes." And there's a big blog roundup here, too.

Clueless

A school shooting in Montreal--this time at a college campus.

Update: Sari Stein has more on the shooting here (Hat tip: Instapundit). What I found most interesting is that Canadians seem to have no realization that violent crime exists: This same lack of awareness and realization of danger was apparent when a madman opened fire in the 1989 massacre at École Polytechnique at the University of Montreal :
