Maybe this is the real reason why Toon, Albright and Berger wanted the docudrama pulled.

Sadly, muslims always butcher all their moderates.

We failed him.

He knew OBL would kill him. I was unaware that it was his troops that defeated the Russians instead of OBL's minions. I hope, where ever he is, OBL/UBL got a chance to view this movie.

I agree. And for all the criticism heaped on ABC for 'softening' some of the Clinton scenes, the telling of the story of Massoud and what we lost that day had the most impact on me. I had read a few things about him previously and knew we lost and the Afghanis had lost someone important but I truly mourned this hero's death for the first time last night. Thank you ABC and the makers of this film.

Well, first of all, I would like to say that this was a very informative post, thank you HAL9000. What I came here to post was some truth to some of the comments made by earlier people. First of all, The comments made by Massoud in the supposed called off attack on Bin Laden's hideout...never happened. Why, you ask? Simple. Massoud was never part of any sort of U.S. special forces strike on Bin Laden. So that was dramatized. The next part is that Massoud would never likely say anything damaging about the US to US citizens, he was seeking aid, and he had an image to uphold, the Northern Alliance's very survival depended on it. Third, Massoud and Reagan never knew each other. I didn't see this mini-series, but come on people...try using other sources besides what is shown to you on tv (you don't seriously believe everything you see on tv, do you? Shame on you).
The man barely ever left Afghanistan (which was one of the very reasons why he was so popular there, he remained on the battlefield, unlike many other mujahideen fighters). This especially goes for during the Afghan-Soviet War. So the idea of him becoming friends with Reagan is ridiculous. The few times he ever did leave were either to Uzbekistan (which shared a border with his northern lines and provided him with aid), Pakistan (back when he was a student, before the Soviet war), and to France (to meet with European officials, to discuss aid), which by the way, adores him, even have a stamp with him on it.
Also, Massoud did run Afghanistan for a short time, but unfortunately he wasn't (and he was the first to admit it) capable of uniting all of the tribes (particularly the Pashtuns aka the majority and a different tribe from that of Massoud's) into a cohesive government. Massoud knew ever since being driven out of the capitol in 1996 that someone else would have to take over once he had defeated the Taliban.
I suggest you read more about him, for he was a truly remarkable man, cut down in his prime. One insightful source was Sebastian Junger's book, Fire, which has the National Geographic article on Massoud (this is the same guy who wrote The Perfect Storm). Also read "The Assassins" by Jon Lee Anderson of The New Yorker. I hope what I have written has cleared up some of the misunderstandings about Ahmed Shah Massoud.

"At a time when the Taliban were vulnerable, the top person of this administration, Mr. Inderfurth, and Bill Richardson, personally went to Afghanistan and convinced the anti-Taliban forces not to go on the offensive and, furthermore, convinced all of the anti-Taliban forces, their supporters, to disarm them and to cease their flow of support for the anti-Taliban forces. At that same moment, Pakistan initiated a major resupply effort, which eventually saw the defeat, and caused the defeat, of almost all of the anti-Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

Bill Richardson--an agent of the Clinton Janus, whose political star (red in color) is inextricably interwoven with that of the two-headed beast.

Coming to a presidential primary near you.

And pay no attention to his gubernatorial opponent's communications director being savagely beaten with a tire iron.
