I've been thinking for a while that Bin Laden and Zawahri have split ways and are being protected by lower level Al-Qaeda ops but with a bare minimum knowledge of maybe a mid-level. If the WP is correct and there hasn't been a credible lead in 2 years then anyone newly captured could quickly turn into the credible lead.

More like a Pakistani and Saudi stooge. He may have fled to Iran after the Taliban came to power but that's becuase he was so bloody and insane he lost the support of the Pakistanis after the Soviets left and he went on a rampage.
The Mujaheddin (the originals) hate the Iranians almost as much as the Soviets. Masood, Hekmatyar, even the Taliban...all the warlords are Sunnis who despise the Iranians.
