Standing upon the ashes of the worst attack ever by a foreign entity on American soil, President Bush pledges that the voices calling for justice from across the country will be heard. Responding to the Presidents' words, rescue workers cheer and chant, "USA! USA!"
"I can hear you. I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."
President George W. Bush, September 14, 2001. Retired firefighter Bob Beckwith stood atop that smouldering firetruck in 2001. Today the President remembered him and shook his hand at St. Paul's Chapel in NYC.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag. --Admiral Jeremiah Denton

President Bush talks with Mrs. Arlene Howard after she presented a police badge found on the body of her son, Port Authority Police officer George Howard. The President and First Lady spent hours comforting family members of victims in the World Trade Center attacks.
The President holds the badge.
"And I will carry this," said President Bush during his address to Congress Sept. 20. "It is the police shield of a man named George Howard, who died at the World Trade Center trying to save others. It was given to me by his mom, Arlene, as a proud memorial to her son. This is my reminder of lives that ended, and a task that does not end."

Although this event took place in October, no retrospective of that period would be complete without remembering the President's brave appearance at Yankee Stadium during the 2001 World Series. All alone atop the pitcher's mound, he pitched a perfect strike while wearing a bulletproof vest.
