Irwin video may be made public

STEVE Irwin's grieving wife Terri will have the final say on whether footage of his last moments alive is made public.

The head of the US TV company that broadcasts his show said today the film had already been handed to Queensland police preparing a report for the Coroner as fans worldwide come to grips with the freak death.

Billy Campbell, the president of Discovery Networks, which owns the Animal Planet channel, said it was far too early to decide what footage viewers would see from Irwin's fatal trip on the Great Barrier Reef.

Talks would take place with Terri at a suitable time, he said.

"It's still too early," Mr Campbell said. "We'll have to take a look at it."

Irwin suffered a deadly blow from a stingray yesterday while shooting footage for a new show he was doing with his eight-year-old daughter, Bindi.

Mr Campbell, who will fly to Australia for Irwin's funeral, said he would also ask Terri whether she would like Bindi's show to go ahead.

"In terms of the Bindi show, a lot of that will depend on the conversations I have with Terri in a couple of days," he said.

"I want to give her a few days to mourn and think through things. "We'll talk about that in due time.

Having seen the other thread, I definitely don't need to see him pulling the barb out. I winced just reading that.

I read where Steve wanted his death to be filmed if it should happen.

If his death were something we could learn from, then perhaps it would merit showing. But it sounds like this was a total freak accident. No point, IMO.

I don't want to see this. I liked this guy and his adorable children!

OMG, he pulled the barb out himself! Wow. What a man. Those backwards barbs are said to be the most dangerous part. Oh, this is so sad.

It's awful to think that he might have fully realized the implications of a barb to the chest.

I know this is nit-picking but Paul Hogan was Crocodile Dundee. Still, Steve Irwin must have been one heck of a fair dinkum guy.

He possibly did, but it sounds like the whole thing was over in less than five seconds. You can't do a whole lot of pondering or self-pitying in that stretch.

I don't think that's long enough for someone like Steve Irwin to believe he's dying. He knew he got hit, he reacted, and it didn't matter.

I just meant that Steve was the "real" crocodile dundee.

"If his death were something we could learn from, then perhaps it would merit showing. But it sounds like this was a total freak accident. No point, IMO."

He got hit because he did something he should have known better than to do. Rays defend themselves from attackers that show as a shadow above them, just as he was in this incident. He knew it could happen, had probably avoided it many a time, but just this once got just a little too close, and from just the wrong angle.

He wanted people to learn from his death, and this will do it. I'm not going to watch the video either, personally. I didn't see it, it didn't really happen. But some people need to see this, so they know that critters can be dangerous. That is why he wanted his death filmed, IMHO. It's just an animal doing what animals do. Not intentional, not an attack, just defense of a potential threat. There is a point, in other words.

No worries, mate. You're right though. The REAL on instead of the fake one. RIP Steve.

His wife is one strong lady! Note:

" ... Terri Irwin was at the other end of the Australian wilderness, at Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. She knew what had happened before police arrived to tell her, despite initial reports that she was unaware of the tragedy as the news went around the world.

Mrs Irwin drove her children and family members to Devonport, where they boarded a private plane just after 5pm. Eight-year-old Bindi Irwin was clutching an armful of blankets as she boarded the plane. Two-year-old Bob - the centre of controversy when his father included him in a crocodile demonstration as a baby at the family's Australia Zoo near Maroochydore - was clutching a pink pig. ..."

>>>She *drove* out of the wilderness! The time to collapse is later.

Unlike showing video of something like 9/11 which I believe has value seeing Irwin die in a freak accident does not appeal to me.

If they release it, then it will be what he is remembered for primarily in the long run.

Don't release it, let him be remembered for his work, not a 10 second tape of his death.

The venom probably would have killed him from what I've read on these threads but if it was in his heart, pulling it out may have accelerated his death. One of those no win situations, sadly.

I'm going to do my best to not see it.

He seemed like a good guy.

I don't need to see it either. If he left instructions or his wife wants to show it to know that some good savaged from this tragedy, then I'm ok with that though.

There's loads of tributes on UTube. The video of his death will be there at some point; I doubt if it will be anything grotesque.

He may have said that, but I prefer to remember his love of life. What a hole he has left in the world's heart.

Seeing the video would not have a greatly damaging effect on me personally, however, I do worry about his children seeing it and how it might affect them to see their father die. I will trust Terri's judgment on the matter.

I'm not so sure it shows his death, as such - just him losing consciousness. I know that's splitting hairs, because we know now that he died a little later.

From what I've read in all the stories, the tape ends when he passes out. Others reported that he was still alive when taken to the boat 2 minutes later, but never regained consciousness.

" ... Irwin's manager and producer John Stainton described the footage, which he had seen, as "shocking."

"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone," Stainton told reporters in the city of Cairns where Irwin's body was taken for an autopsy.

"That was it. The cameraman had to shut down," Stainton added. ..."
