STEVE Irwin's grieving wife Terri will have the final say on whether footage of his last moments alive is made public.
The head of the US TV company that broadcasts his show said today the film had already been handed to Queensland police preparing a report for the Coroner as fans worldwide come to grips with the freak death.
Billy Campbell, the president of Discovery Networks, which owns the Animal Planet channel, said it was far too early to decide what footage viewers would see from Irwin's fatal trip on the Great Barrier Reef.
Talks would take place with Terri at a suitable time, he said.
"It's still too early," Mr Campbell said. "We'll have to take a look at it."
Irwin suffered a deadly blow from a stingray yesterday while shooting footage for a new show he was doing with his eight-year-old daughter, Bindi.
Mr Campbell, who will fly to Australia for Irwin's funeral, said he would also ask Terri whether she would like Bindi's show to go ahead.
"In terms of the Bindi show, a lot of that will depend on the conversations I have with Terri in a couple of days," he said.
"I want to give her a few days to mourn and think through things. "We'll talk about that in due time.

As we can all see here, he was special.
It can only do good to show the death strike, post it on the web. It will help remind us that nature is deadly, not fuzzy and cuddly. There is a reason we have dominion over it. Hey, remember the guy who got himself and his girlfriend eaten by grizlies playing "today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic"? And didn't the Aussies have a PM eaten by a Greeat White Shark? Don'y forget about spotted owls -- nasty, vicious little birds that have to kill every night to live. We are choking on PC BS! Show the deal.

In any case I am not going to watch the video of his death.
Several million dollars isn't what it used to be. What the heck is she going to do with a zoo, when the star attraction is gone? Stuff like that chews up money like crazy. There will be residuals from syndication and licensing and such, but she won't be in fat city by any stretch. Given the line of work Irwin was in, I hope he gave it some thought while he was alive.
If it were my decision, I would erase the tape. There is more than enough footage of Mr. Irwin full of life and joy. That is what we should se.
I have no need or desire to see a very likeable man killed horribly and dying in terrible pain. It is very nearly the last thing I want to see.

I can read this either optimistically, or cynically. Optimistically, they are giving Terri the option of scrapping the whole episode, to which I would commend them. Cynically, they are leaving open the option of showing the attack. If that is the case, why should Terri have the final say? Doesn't the network, director, and producer have any ability or ethical obligation to say that it is below their standards to profit from showing one of their stars being killed?
Whether or not he would have wanted it that way, if I were a network executive, I would have the final say. Saying that she has the final say is just washing my hands of the responsibility. I would honor her wishes to NOT show the footage. But if she wanted to show it, that would not be an automatic decision for me to show it. And announcing publicly that she has the final say puts her in a terrible public position she was not in only a day ago, and never asked for. I would hope they would like to protect her more than that.
I grieve for Steve and his wife and family and for all his fans. With a good business manager, she should be able to do just fine.

Very similar circumstances. She most definitely has my sympathy but I'm not ready to extend pity. Steve left her in fine financial shape.
If it did hit him in the heart, he may have killed himself by pulling it out. Although I can't imagine having a 20-centimeter barbed bone shaft with venom in it left in the heart muscle would've been much better.
Y'know, thinking about it, we all know a Steve Irwin. Most of us have this one guy in our family tree, somewhere...just a good ol' boy, simple, maybe rural, kind of rednecky, loves the outdoors, and oh yeah, he's batpoop crazy. He's the guy who's always doing insane stuff. The guy whose mantra is "hey y'all, watch THIS!" And yet, somehow, he always pulls it off. And, if you ever need him, he's ALWAYS there for you. I think that sort of thing, combined with the fact that Australia holds a real fascination for those of us up here in the States, is why Steve Irwin got so huge up here.
