As a kids, around 1960, all my neighborhood buddies were fans of the despised Yankees. When we'd play pick-up ball, there was always a fight over who'd get to be Mantle, Maris, Ford, Berra, etc. However, while visiting an American uncle who the lived in Royal Oak, he took me to my first MLB game at old Tiger Stadium & I remained a Tigers fan until the Jays came along in the late 70's.

Kaline's arguably 3rd - or at least in the top 5 - of all-time Detroit greats and definitely the best one I ever saw play.
