Sidenote: I just got word that MrsDrumbo's Grandmother is in the hospital in Charleston with a bad bout of emphysema. Char and Mike are staying with her grand dad tonight and other relatives are flying in from Chicago. I'm standing by to bolt should I get the word, so if I suddenly dissappear, don't worry or take it personal. Spare prayers for Mikey's Great Grandma are appreciated.
I'm going to post as much as I can as soon as possible, but I'm altering the format to get Santana's career highlight's posted now and then as many tunes as I can mannage.
In August, 1994, on the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock Festival, Santana performed at Woodstock II. That same year he teamed with his brother Jorge Santana (one-time leader of Malo) and co-produced the album "Brothers".
In 1996 Carlos Santana was honored with the Century Award for lifetime achievement by the Billboard Music Awards.
In 1998 Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
On June 1, 1999, 'Supernatural', Santana's first album for Arista Records, was released. It went on to sell more than 21 million copies worldwide13 million in the U.S. alone. Though released at midyear, 'Supernatural' is 1999's sixth best-selling album.
CORRECTION: Earlier I stated Santana had sold over 30 million albums worldwide. While that's true, I dropped a zero and the statement should have been over 300 million!
On October 23, 1999, "Smooth," with lyrics and vocals by Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, becomes Santana's first #1 single. It holds down the top spot for 12 consecutive weeks and is the longest running #1 single of 1999.
In 2000 Carlos Santana swept the 42nd annual Grammy Awards, winning in nine categories. Santana's latest compilation "All That I Am" is another triumph of virtuosity and taste.
