Fox News and Forced Conversions (Robert Spencer Alert)
Front Page Magazine ^ | 30 August 2006 | Robert Spencer

Posted on 08/30/2006 5:10:36 AM PDT by unionblue83

The most bizarre element of the two weeks of captivity suffered by Fox News reporter Steve Centanni and photographer Olaf Wiig at the hands of Gaza’s Holy Jihad Brigade was the video that surfaced depicting their conversion to Islam. Even before the journalists revealed that their conversions had been coerced, there were disturbing indications that they were not acting freely. While reading a statement he himself had ostensibly written, Centanni stumbled over words, appeared to puzzle over the handwriting, and seemed to grimace after pronouncing the words “peace be upon him” after the name of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Their messages as new converts to Islam were predictable denunciations of the United States and Israel, combined with emphasis on Islam’s universal call as the solution to the world’s problems. But most jarring was the video editor’s invocation of the favorite Qur’an verse of Western analysts of Islam and terrorism, “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256). The irony of featuring this verse in a video depicting two forced conversions has been widely noted. In fact, however, the juxtaposition of this verse with the video of Centanni and Wiig was probably not simply transparent deception, as strange as that may seem, and has far-reaching implications.

you are so right

Solmon Rushdie was a man WAY ahead of his time when he wrote "The Satanic Verses"

Why isn't he being interviewed? (I bet he just wants to stay low profile- there IS a death threat with $million bounty on his head from "the religion of peace")

“There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256).
Yeah, right. As if the islamofascist women-mutilating SOB's believe that for a second.

My favorite quotation on this subject:

"Forced worship stinks in God's nostrils." -- Roger Williams

The Koran says it is fine to lie to accomplish your purpose so maybe that is what Steve did.

Has the US or the UN filed any charges against the Gaza Holy Jihad Brigade or the Palestinian government? Since an American citizen was captured and held against his will (kidnapped) at gunpoint, and since the Palestinian president was instrumental in securing Centanni's release, the Holy Jihad Brigade must be affiliated with, or at least known by, the Palestinian government? Or does the US and the UN just view the Holy Jihad Brigade as a renegade terrorist group that is untouchable?

Have either renounced their 'conversion'?

Even after being freed, Centani was lauding the Palestinian people, etc.

Centani is a coward, and the world would be a better place if the Pali people disappeared off the planet.

So, they were just being good muslims and doing what the Koran said they could do? /sarcasm

He may be saying a lot of things just to be able to get back into that region again. Although why he would want to after what he's been through, I don't know.

The man only said that his job had been to do backgrounders on the people living there ~ as distinct from doing political or military type stories.

That's not exactly "lauding" anybody.

After being freed, Centanni said: “We were forced to convert to Islam at gunpoint. Don’t get me wrong here. I have the highest respect for Islam, and I learned a lot of good things about it, but it was something we felt we had to do because they had the guns, and we didn’t know what … was going on.”

If he hadn't "converted", would he have been murdered, like Christians who refused to bow to the Emperor were burned like torches or fed to lions?

You are taking one statement and drawing your conclusion.

Watch the video of him the day he was freed. His comments then were not under duress.

He has some contacts now that the CIA should have had 20 years ago.

"That's not exactly "lauding" anybody."

The thing to do is tell them you have converted, then after they release you, tell them to kiss your @ss. At a minimum, I would NEVER say a good word about my captors or their gutter religion of psychopaths.

Right, sure ~ I watched the video. Was he outside the Islamofascist terrorists field of fire?

Seems to me just about everybody coming out of these kidnappings makes doggone sure he's in the clear (and in another country) before mouthing off.

If you don't believe this phenomenon is real, may I propose a test. Secure several strangers you don't know. Arm them. Have them hold you face down in a garage for several hours. Make sure it's done at gunpoint. Then, they take you somewhere else. Everybody wears masks.

So no one takes offense too much, let's see them coerce you into becoming an Episcopalean!

You have to read from the Book of Common Prayer. If you misread something they smack you upside the head with a rifle butt.

Do this for a week.

It's all voluntary too. Remember that, all voluntary!

You'll come out of there singing a mass for sure.

Yup, that's the rule. If you refuse to convert then they are directed to kill you.

's in the Koran

Once having converted, if you reject Islam, you are an "apostate," and that's worth your life. Centanni and Wiig had better steer clear of the Middle East, or anywhere else where Muzzies congregate (e.g. Londonistan.)

I agree Centani is a coward; he's the example of the media in general.
I heard Sean Hannity defending Centani's mouthing off he'd converted to Islam.
It fits in the vein of George Bush saying we're all worshipping the same God; Bush is the same coward.
From a Christian perspective, any kind of confession of allegiance to a foreign god is strictly forbidden. The first centurty early church experienced this repeatedly.
Centani let's us know who he is along with Sean Hannity, George Bush, et. al.
