A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Cowboy Blues

I yearn for the life that I used to know
When the range was free and wide,
When a man could see where the sunsets go
'Way out past the Great Divide.

Oh I want to mount my old cayuse
And gallop off with a song,
To twirl my rope and to throw the noose
And chase the dogies along.

I long for the roads of yesterday,
For the trails I used to ride,
For the cowboy's life, his yip-oo-ray
As he roamed the countryside.

What's a man to do who rode all day
Through shortgrass and mesquite,
With tractors and plows and a paved-highway
And fenced-in fields of wheat?

My sad heart pines for the prairies still,
I long to follow the trail,
I miss the call of the whippoorwill
And the coyote's lonesome wail.

I want to feel the wind in my face
And to give my horse the word,
To wheel and turn as he sets the pace
And cuts through a longhorn herd.

Stuffed Diamondback

1 - 3 ft. or longer Diamondback
1 cup dried cornbread cubes
1 tbsp oil
1/2 cup beef stock
1/2 stalk of celery, chopped
1/2 onion,chopped
1 tbsp Jack Daniels whiskey
1 cup molasses
1 cherry tomato

Slice down belly of snake from bottom of jaw to tail with a shallow cut. Gut the snake and throw away internals. Run gutted snake under warm tap water and remove extra blood.

In a mixing bowl, mix cornbread cubes, oil, beef stock, celery and onion. Allow to stand for 10-15 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.

Roll stuffing into a tube (snake) shape and insert along the inside of snake. Close up skin and sew together with cooking twine in a zig-zag pattern.

In a small mixing bowl, mix Jack Daniels and molasses. Set aside.

Place snake in a casserole dish. Make sure snake does not overlap as uneven cooking will occur.

With a cooking brush, brush snake with Jack Daniels glaze. Pour extra glaze around the snake in the casserole dish.

Place casserole dish into 275 degree oven for an hour and a half or until tender.

Remove casserole dish from oven and prop open snake's mouth. Place cherry tomato in mouth for appearance.

Serve and Enjoy!

Refuge Needed

READ: Psalm 17:1-9

Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings. —Psalm 17:8 In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of the southern United States, displaced families and individuals were often referred to in the media as “refugees.” For some, this term was viewed as insulting, so it prompted reporters to scramble for another word that would not be perceived as negative. They decided on the word evacuees.

In actuality, the word refugee is filled with hope. One dictionary defines it as “one who flees in search of refuge, as in times of war, political oppression, or religious persecution.” Refugee comes from the word refuge, which speaks of safety, protection, and care for the hurting. It speaks of a safe haven in a storm-filled world.

For those who have been battered by the storms, tragedies, and disasters of life, refuge is what they long for most. They may seek shelter in the arms of God, who alone can give us refuge and who longs to cover us and protect us and preserve us.

Jesus said to the broken people of His day, “How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings” (Matthew 23:37). He continues to offer refuge to the hurting hearts of our day if we will but seek His care and trust His heart. Bill Crowder

O Rock divine, O Refuge dear—
A shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our helper ever near—
A shelter in the time of storm.  —Charlesworth

We need not fear life’s dark shadows when we rest under the shadow of God’s wings.

Howdy, y'all. (Love the Western graphics posted this morning!)

Git along little dogies....

In the language of the American West, a motherless calf is known as a dogie. In Western Words Ramon F. Adams gives one possible etymology for dogie, whose origin is unknown. During the 1880s, when a series of harsh winters left large numbers of orphaned calves, the little calves, weaned too early, were unable to digest coarse range grass, and their swollen bellies “very much resembled a batch of sourdough carried in a sack.” Such a calf was referred to as dough-guts. The term, altered to dogie according to Adams, “has been used ever since throughout cattleland to refer to a pot-gutted orphan calf.” Another possibility is that dogie is an alteration of Spanish dogal, “lariat.” Still another is that it is simply a variant pronunciation of doggie.

LOL! Yeah, I clicked on the "Cowboy"....now that Happy Trails tune is in my head and won't stop playing. I haven't listened to Amy's "Don't Fence Me In" yet....but I guess that is the only way I am going to get "Happy Trails" to STOP.

You have a good day, sistah.

Great trip to the Old West, Amy. Makes me want to go saddle up my trusty steed once again...

...and ride to trail's end...

...while Vaughn Monroe sings in the background.
