Apple Computer (Nasdaq: AAPL) leads all other PC makers in customer satisfaction , but the reason for its lead may not be very satisfying for Steve Jobs and other executives at the Cupertino, Calif.-based company.

Simply put, it's not that Apple is a dazzling performer in terms of customer care, but that the other computer manufacturers are almost uniformly dismal in that realm, according to customers surveyed by the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index team. The research demonstrates that Apple is more effective at customer service than Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) , Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and others.

"That would be Dell. Or more specifically, Sony"

Attached to an Apple.

Where's the quality control?

OK, quick. Somebody hijack this thread. I can't stand the Apple vs. PC arguments.

Guys, I'm well aware of the Apple battery recall.

If you'll take note, however, the batteries being recalled are manufactured by Sony. Sony batteries are also at fault in the recent Dell recall.

Thus why I mentioned Sony. Because Sony's batteries are the ones blowing up.

Where's the quality control?

At Sony's manufacturing plants. Supposedly.

"At Sony's manufacturing plants. Supposedly."

Blame the manufacturer. OK.

Blame the manufacturer. OK.

I'm pretty sure that's where blame normally lies when a part screws up. Since when was one supposed to blame the assembler?

Uh, they're just exploding the laptops that Americans don't want to explode? How can anyone talk about computers when babies are being aborted? It's all Abraham Lincoln's fault?

I build my own computers. I am my own tech support. I get the best support whenever I need it.

Apple who? Dell who?

If "technology" refers to overly-vague wording in patents related to the oh-so-advanced technology of putting compressed music onto a portable media player and some basic UI concepts on that player, then sure.

Dell's support isn't that bad.

Just make sure you know exactly what the problem is, what needs replacement and why. Then answer "I've done that already" to every suggestion by the tech support robots (preferably by e-mail, so you won't spend hours on hold, and then have to speak to someone whose accent makes them barely understandable), and tell them to send you the part you need and you'll install it yourself.

It's called do-it-yourself tech support. It works.

You can trace it as far back as Whitewater.
