FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel/Russian Jewry ping list.

Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.

Yep, the USA has been the best thing to happen to the world for over two hundred years...think that's why the Europeans love to bash us so much...oh well...they can get use to burqas and sharia law while making fun of us in the future.

“When life becomes an extended picnic, with nothing of importance to do,” writes Charles Murray in In Our Hands, “ideas of greatness become an irritant. Such is the nature of the Europe syndrome.”

And not just Europe - that's the best capsule description of the San Francisco Bay Area limousine liberal mentality I've ever seen.

I am so glad that I didn't buy into all that "population bomb" Paul Ehrlich crap from the '60's and '70's and popped out 9 babies while all my liberal relatives looked on in horror.

LOL!

I didn't have nine, for a variety of reasons beyond my control, but I did make it to three - and I one time had a woman my own age (late 20s at that time) come up to me while I was with my kids in a park in San Francisco and start berating me for "cluttering up the world" with children. When I lived on the West Coast, I would get comments like that all the time. I bet you got them, too; heck, the woman would have had an apoplectic fit and died if she'd seen you with your 9!

In 2005, Tomy began marketing a new doll called Yumel – a baby boy with a range of 1,200 phrases designed to serve as companions for the elderly. He says not just the usual things – “I wuv you” – but also asks the questions your grandchildren would ask if you had any: “Why do elephants have long noses?”

I remember seeing this on FR. It makes we wish I could adopt a Japanese grandmother to come here and listen to my kids talk! (The language barrier would probably be helpful - like my Dad can turn his hearing aids off when he's here :-).

I wish each of his columns were the size of a standard hardcover.

Mark Steyn and Thomas Sowell. Someone suggested the other day that Thomas Sowell's brain should be put in a robot body, so he could keep writing for another 100 years. Ditto for Steyn - but we could try it on Dr. Sowell first, since he's getting pretty old!

"Where The West Went Wrong & Surrendered to Islamofascism 101".

I would respectfully suggest that you missed his point. Islam - Radical or Otherwise - is no more the basic problem than the barbarians were for the Roman Empire. It is not that they are strong; the West is weak.

We worry incessantly, because worrying is the way the responsible citizen of an advanced society demonstrates his virtue: He feels good about feeling bad. So he worries mostly about what offers the best opportunities for self-loathing – climate change, or the need to increase mostly harmful foreign aid to African dictatorships. This is a kind of decadence.

It is at least that. It is also a form of virtue perfected by the medieval self-flagellants but without the concomitant courage to stripe one's own back. Instead it is one's neighbors who will be required to do so, and as ever where no pain is felt by the principals, no amount of flagellation will ever be enough. Thus the environmental policy of someone whose ability to hike over virgin wilderness is to be offset by everyone else living in government barracks and toiling on the communal farms. Nice work if you can get it.

But as Steyn points out, the West was dying culturally long before the babies stopped coming. Rap and McDonald's have conquered largely by filling a void just as the Islamic armies did in the 7th century of fond Arab nostalgia and aspiration. It's easy to conquer where there's nothing left to fight.

We need more people to makes this much sense. Reasoning and common sense are in short supply at most media outlets.
Thank God for FR and bless all fellow Freepers!

ummm, yeah...that's why I said "surrendered"? I probably was vague though, my commentary wasn't specifically on this piece - re Steyn's work in general.

I love Steyn the best, but I am getting a little tired of the demographic-catastrophe approach to the future. The true action is in a sphere other than the physical. When are we going to get serious about the war of ideas?
