Senator Meets Leaders Over Ethnic Comment (Sen. Allen Meets Indian/American Leaders over Comment)
Buffalo News ^ | 8/17/06

ARLINGTON, Va. - Sen. George Allen met Wednesday with Indian-American political leaders concerned that he referred to a rival's campaign staffer as "macaca" and told the Virginia native of Indian descent, "Welcome to America."

Members of the US Indian Political Action Committee said they have received hundreds of e-mails about the comments Allen made Friday at a speech that S.R. Sidarth was videotaping for his Democratic challenger, Jim Webb.

"Obviously this is something that has us very, very concerned," said Sanjay Puri, a northern Virginia businessman and founder and director of the committee, which claims 30,000 members. "The remarks are very insensitive."

Sidarth and others consider the remark offensive. Macaca is a genus of monkeys including macaques, but Allen has said he just made up a word that sounds similar to "Mohawk," a nickname Allen staffers gave Sidarth because of his partially cropped hair.

Allen, who is positioning himself for a possible presidential run in 2008, has said he apologizes to Sidarth if he took any offense, but the 20-year-old college student has said he thinks Allen's remarks were an attempt to highlight Sidarth's race in what he says was an all-white crowd.

Puri, who described himself as nonpartisan, said his committee has had good relations with Allen and he has been receptive to the group's political interests on issues including the economy and immigration. But he added that Allen has a "lot of bridges to be mended."

Allen's campaign declined to comment, deferring to Puri and other organizers.

Hey Senator, as long as you're meeting with them, promise them that if you're elected you'll push for the institution of a caste system.

Yes, he's drifting into a "Trent Lott Complex" over this.

Is everyone truly dumb enough to think that Senator Allen can speak Hindi or whatever it was?

This is such a tempest in a teapot.

No kidding. So overblown it crossed the border into the ridiculous. Furthermore, Allen has shown himself to be a clown by going around and apologizing everyday. I did not know what a Macaca was either, and I suspect the rest of America does'nt either.

If as many Americans don't know that macaque refers to monkeys as is being suggested, well, I don't know what to say.

I am aware what a macaque is. I've even seen a few in my day. However, I still have no idea what that has to do with Allen's comment:

"This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great,"

It appears to me that Allen was trying to use a funny sounding nonsense word to somewhat belittle this guy. The fact that "macaca" happens to be a word used somewhere to describe a type of macaque is a tad esoteric.

A simple apology was sufficient. Allen's hand-wringing, and bowing to whatever altar that he is directed to pay homage to, is making him appear guilty of an offense far in excess of what was originally said. He is not leadership material.

Ah, now I get it! You can get into deep macaca at the UN and still not have to apologize for it. I see, I see. :)

WELL, I'm cetainly glad you put in a preemptive apology. I think your post is demeaning to monkeys everywhere. I trust you'll be meeting with Simian and, ah, Primate leaders soon?

I have already been directed to bring a letter of apology to the UN Representative of The Republic of Macaca.

I remember a TV interview with democrat Robert Byrd of W.VA.
He used an uacceptable term and was given a chance to retract it right away and did not. It was far worse than George Allens remark.

I still remember his hurtful remarks to this day, and I haven't recovered. He was talking about white macacas. Oh, the horror.

We used to call this "trumped up charges." The senator is lucky his accusers aren't IN charge of anything, but can only smear him on the street, drive-by style.
In either case the intent is to cripple him.

I realize he's trying to cut his losses and put this behind him quickly, however it plays into the hands of the media. I'm sorry he apologized.

Now if he reverted to the old British slur and called him a 'Little Sammy' I could see an apology. This is just more bigottted predjudice on the part of the double-standard-driven Leftists in the MSM.
