WASHINGTON -- Immigration officials have now picked up all but two of the 11 Egyptian exchange students who came to the U.S. for a summer course in Montana but never showed up for classes.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents tracked three of the students to Des Moines. They were arrested at about 8 p.m. Friday, and are being held in the Polk County Jail.
They will be here until a federal immigration judge decides if they will face charges or be deported. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents won't say what led them to find these students in Des Moines or where they were staying. The students are Ahmed Laket, 19, Mohamed Moghazy, 20, and 18-year-old Moustafa Gafary. Agents are not releasing their pictures.
Others were picked up earlier in New Jersey, Maryland, Chicago and Minnesota. They were part of a group of 17 who arrived in New York July 29 en route to a month-long program at Montana State University in Bozeman. Six reported on time, but the 11 others were no-shows.
Immigration officials said the students are not considered a terrorism risk, but all the no-shows now face deportation.
Montana State contacted Homeland Security officials after repeatedly trying to contact the missing students, under procedures put into place after Sept. 11, 2001, to track foreign students.
yes, well that is the very nature of trying to thwart these terror attacks BEFORE they occur. our justice system is designed to deal with crime in the aftermath. if we simply extend the presumption of innocence to mean that we can't even investigate these kinds of things - and simply let these guys walk because no crime has been committed, there being a litany of "it could have been" excuses to explain their actions - then we've lost the domestic war on terrorism. its just a matter of time then before their attacks here are successful.
after all, its not really a crime to attend a flight school in the united states, is it?
They picked up the last two tonight in Richmond, Virginia. Just broke on Drudge's radio show a few minutes ago. Two Mohammeds apparently turned themselves in.
no post on his website yet.
Thanks for the update.
don't forget that nice jaunt to san fran on the way to iowa... must be nice to have that financial freedom at their age...:|
Not to be a wiseass, but this time of year it rises surprisingly far in the northeast and sets equally far in the northwest. Our house faces north and gets direct sunlight on all four walls.
They make sure they have the language down before the students show up.
Anyway, moot point, two more were found in richMNond Virginia ~ and I'd bet they got some "help" too! ROTFLMAO.
First, you go West.
This can be readily accomplished through hitchhiking.
That's even a comedy routine in numerous "we're on vacation" movies. It's a common human foible. What is to understand? You don't get out much do you.
It's a crime to enter the US without a visa.
Are you 'splainin' something, like maybe we ought to enforce the law, even against the illegals sleeping under the bridge down the street?
On the other hand, we talked about all sorts of stuff in German ~ and neither one of us knew that much German.
Ha ha...you're real funny. Too bad you can't (or won't) respond with common sense. But hitchhiking? How is he supposed to do that if he doesn't speak English, which is your premise? Oh wait...I know...he only accepts rides from Arabic people who then roll him for his money but not his plane ticket. I get it now.
People do this. Maybe you don't know any.
I think the key part of the story was that the SCHOOL reported them. Why isn't the gov. doing this?
A local radio host (Jay Severin) said - days after 9-11 - that we would soon see if the gov was going to get serious about terrorism.
It isn't.
Maybe these guys can hire you as their defense attorney for their Immigration hearings. You've managed to provide them with their "victim" defense quite well.
Wow...lucky you.
Little details like the sun rising over the ocean instead of setting there...
No I don't. Unfortunately I spent my career in law enforcement where people don't hitchhike due to the potential of becoming victims, which is what you seem to be an expert in.
OK, so then you agree - these 11 guys are criminals.
good, let's stop making excuses for them being lost.
The school IS the government.
