WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Terrorists were in the "final stages" of a plot to simultaneously blow up as many as 10 jets leaving Britain for the U.S., sending the planes and thousands of passengers into the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.
British and Pakistani authorities teamed up to thwart the attacks, and 24 men were arrested in overnight raids in Britain, authorities said.

I guess I assumed it was obvious the cell had been infiltrated, so I'm not surprised by this. Plus, I don't have a problem with them being more suspicious of each other.
Chertoff wouldn't have revealed this information to the press if he didn't want it published. In all likelyhood, as another poster mentioned, this is meant to instill paranoia in the terrorist cells. "Does Abdul REALLY want to blow up that plane with me, or is he a CIA plant ready to sell me out?"
It'll make them eat a lot of their own just to be "safe".

In addition knowing that they were under surveilance since December and weren't aware of it has to make other plotters nervous in the service and spend more time worrying and suspecting each other than plotting
Don't forget to include the home addresses and kid's photos of the agents.
Why do we have to tell them every detail of how we catch them? Everytime some law enforcement people seem to try to outdo the NYT providing details.
Just tell them you are still investigating and wouldn't want to release details that would tip off other bad guys. Continue to say this as long as you can. No need to try to impress the reporters with details. Although it is fun to find out how we got them, we don't need to know until it comes out in the trial. Just STFU.
Expect the age, names, and adresses of the anti-terrorism operative sources to show up. The terrorist themselves will be protected by the ACLU.

Just hope it's disinformation, with just electronic surveillance
doing the job.
Any plotter not picked up will be at great risk at by any of the other
plotters not yet captured.
Any suspect released will likewise be at risk. Might want to talk before
returning to buddies who will guess he's the mole.
Just lovely; like the old "Mission: Impossible" shows in which the bad guys
get so skull-fornicated that they start eliminating each other.
It reminds me of an old joke from 2001.
