CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Teens whose iPods are full of music with raunchy, sexual lyrics start having sex sooner than those who prefer other songs, a study found.
Whether it's hip-hop, rap, pop or rock, much of popular music aimed at teens contains sexual overtones. Its influence on their behavior appears to depend on how the sex is portrayed, researchers found.
Songs depicting men as "sex-driven studs," women as sex objects and with explicit references to sex acts are more likely to trigger early sexual behavior than those where sexual references are more veiled and relationships appear more committed, the study found.
Teens who said they listened to lots of music with degrading sexual messages were almost twice as likely to start having intercourse or other sexual activities within the following two years as were teens who listened to little or no sexually degrading music.
Among heavy listeners, 51 percent started having sex within two years, versus 29 percent of those who said they listened to little or no sexually degrading music.
Exposure to lots of sexually degrading music "gives them a specific message about sex," said lead author Steven Martino, a researcher for Rand Corp. in Pittsburgh. Boys learn they should be relentless in pursuit of women and girls learn to view themselves as sex objects, he said.

It works pretty good on adults too.
In a related story, listening to Dan Fogelberg turns men into p*ssies.
Garbage in, garbage out.
What you feed your brain determines your actions.
In other news....the sun will rise in the east tomorrow.
This is BS. Take it from someone who has raised children. It's raging hormones and curiosity. Music has nothing to do with it.
marvin gaye and his ilk knew this decades ago.
I have been looking into this for sometime. I don't think it's just the lyrics either. Think of all those cheesy type of love songs that men laugh at, but pretend to like because they get women in the mood. I even admit that the lyrics may be silly, but something about the music....
"This is BS. Take it from someone who has raised children. It's raging hormones and curiosity. Music has nothing to do with it."
Take it from someone who was once a teenager, I agree with you.
Listening to sexy music makes teenagers get laid?
So THAT'S what I was doing wrong in high school...I listened to metal...
It would seem to me, if kids are listening to that type of music, and the parents are letting them, that the parents either don't give a care about what influences their kids or what direction their kids are going in, and/or they aren't talking to them and teaching them very good morales and values and thereby making it easier for these kids to act out and do foolish, irresponsible things (i.e., have sex, etc).
When these types of "studies" pop up, I tend to look toward the parenting (or lack of therein).
Sterilize them... force'm to listen to an hour of Slim Whitman.
I think it is backwards. I think kids that are more likely to have sex are more likely to enjoy that kind of music.
Man, am I in the wrong business! I need to be turning out studies like this one.
Ooooh, that evils Elvis Presley and his hips must be outlawed NOW!!
I knew this very well when I was 18 and a senior and high school.
Neil Sedaka was an advocate of teen marriage as evidenced by Calender Girl's lyrics-
"March,I'm going to march you down the aisle...
June,I'm going to take you to the Junior Prom"
Most Juniors are around 16 years old.
