Voters in Connecticut rejected three-term Sen. Joe Lieberman for a political newcomer in the nation's first major test of the depth of anger over the Iraq war.
But Lieberman, undaunted, vowed to run as an independent against fellow Democrat Ned Lamont. "For the sake of our state, our country and my party, I cannot and will not let that result stand," he said of Tuesday's Democratic primary results.
On Wednesday, leaders of the Democratic Party aim to make him change his mind - before Lieberman's camp files a petition to run as an independent, due by the afternoon.
State leaders - including fellow Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd and a long list of top officials who only days before were campaigning for Lieberman - planned to rally for Lamont on Wednesday morning.

Air America's Jerry Springer and all his dufus callers are in absolute meltdown over Joe running as an independent. "He's not following the rules," "what will we tell our children?", blah, blah, blah. It's hilarious.
The GOP needs to distance from Lieberman, lest they offend many Democrats would will vote for Lieberman, and may make them vote for Lamont out of spite. The GOP needs to stay low-key here.
How about this scenario:
Lieberman runs as independent, and splits the dems so that the Repub candidate wins, gaining that seat?
I agree. I expect the state GOP will probably ignore Schlesinger, and work quietly behind the scenes to help Lieberman.
They're starting to realize they've just lost a seat in the Senate. Typical Liberal stuff. Have an emotional reaction to something, and then try to rationalize that response after the damage is done.

In Connecticut, Bombshell Hits Schlesinger Campaign
The Hartford Courant sent a bunker bomb in to Connecticut Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Alan Schlesinger’s flagging campaign today with revelations that the former legislator was successfully sued for thousands of dollars in casino debts he ran up in Atlantic City venues. Schlesinger’s campaign was rocked last week by the news that, among other things, he had gambled in a Connecticut Indian casino under an assumed name, Alan Gold. His luck will have run out now.
Word of his gambling debts will renew calls for Schlesinger to abandon his tattered candidacy...
Hardly a viable GOP candidate, IMHO...

True, but national defense trumps everything. We cannot not risk a three-way race.
AMEN, tsomer. That's where I'm coming from as well. The GOP candidate in CT should drop out, IMHO, unless they can somehow dredge up a stronger GOP candidate...
Schlesinger's not viable, but there are perks (i.e.: the ability to peddle influence and get funds rolling in) to staying in the campaign.
He will not get out.
He cannot win.
Republicans will cross over MASSIVELY to vote for Lieberman.
We have to do it.
He's right on the war, and that's THE issue.
The Dems lost a seat last night.
We can't let them take it back, and Schlesinger will poll worse than David Duke (there WAS, after all, a racist constituency for him; where's the constituency ANYWHERE for a guy with huge hidden gambling debts?)
Also, Lieberman has shown a lot of loyalty to the people who pick him in the past. I keep bringing up his singular act of residual loyalty to Al Gore, refusing to declare in 2004 until Gore said he wasn't running.
The Dems just threw a loyal liberal off the train.
Now they want to stuff him under the wheels, but Independents, Republicans, and SANE Democrats aren't going to let that happen here in Connecticut.
Lieberman will be re-elected, and he'll be closer to his voters than ever. No national party will be helping him. It'll just be US, and he does listen, and he remembers who his friends are.
An Independent Lieberman in the Senate will be a less compromising Lieberman. He doesn't HAVE to compromise when he actually has the people of his state with him over against BOTH parties, does he?
That's a good thing, on balance.

unfortunately the R in this race - Schlesinger - is damaged goods. he had a gambling problem and a couple of pseudonyms at Foxwoods with different names on different wampum cards. was a card counter who still managed to get into massive gambling debt
he refuses to get out of the race despite the Governor asking him to.
