Responding to what Democrats and a political expert alike are calling a smear campaign, the state Republican Party is verbally disavowing an e-mail sent by one of its staffers that makes personal allegations against Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland and his wife.
But Republican party officials did not distribute a follow-up e-mail or take any other action to repudiate the e-mail, which suggests that the Stricklands are gay.
"Every time we think weve reached the sewer, theres a lower level of sewer," said Larry J. Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, who has written about dirty campaign strategies in both parties.
The e-mail, obtained by The Dispatch, was sent to an undisclosed group of GOP supporters with instructions to forward it to others by Gary Lankford, whom the party hired in July as its "social conservative coordinator." He was paid $16,000 as a "voter contact consultant" for the primary-election campaign of GOP gubernatorial candidate J. Kenneth Blackwell before taking the party job.
Among other things, the e-mail says Strickland married his wife, Frances, at 46, has no children and lives apart from her. It also links readers to an Internet blog that directly questions the sexual orientation of both Stricklands and notes accusations he is "soft on those who sexually assault children."
Blackwell spokesman Carlo LoParo said that Blackwell doesnt support the tactics used by Lankford.

How have you been, MurryMom?
Another DUngbeetle from the DUngheap?
She's the token liberal that Jim lets hang around. She's been an occasional hit-and-run poster on here for years. She's actually rather polite, she's just a moonbat.

MurryMom's a fixture around here. She plays by the rules and though Jim has noted that this isn't a liberal debating society, it's always good to be challenged.
As for the gov campaign, they tend to get a little to loose with the oversight on both sides. It's just that the media loves to throw the hypocrisy label at Republicans knowing full well the Democrats have no moral values.
another DUmper from the DU wasteland
Lankford was paid lots of money while on the GOP payroll. The Democratic Party does not tolerate any counterparts of smear artists like Karl Rove, Anne Coulter, and Lankford. Maybe that's why our candidates are running well in the polls in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other swing states.
I'm better now that the good guys appear ready to ring up a string of electoral victories, thank you.
Maybe that's why Michael Moore was sitting in the presidental box with Jimmah Carter!!
Good Guys?? If you liked Taft you'll love Strickland!!
Chris Cizilla (sp) Washington Post lists Strickland as a "conservative" democrat. What a joke!! Strickland describes HIMSELF as a Dennis Kucinich clone!! He has an ACU rating of 8, an attendance rating of 402, and an influence record of 427. And this guy picked LEE FISHER for a running mate. He's a minister that doesn't attend church. Pro Gun but doesn't own firearms. The people of OHIO will not be fooled, my lady, just because of some nutjob.
What do you have to say about the "crooks" that supported Taft and are now supporting Strickland?
We're tired of the "country club" Republicans and the "limosine liberals"!! It's time to stop the "same old, same old'. Here in Ohio we have a chance to make a real difference!
It's ok if you believe this, I still love you.
By the way, keep November 7th open, I want to share a bottle of bubbly with you when Diana Irey thrashes Murtha.
