Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, whose country abandoned weapons of mass destruction programmes in 2003, said that at one stage Libya had come close to building a nuclear bomb, the Libyan news agency reported on Monday.

"It is true that Libya came close to building a nuclear bomb. This is no longer a secret … as everything was laid bare by the International Atomic (Energy) Agency for everyone to see," the agency quoted Gaddafi as saying on Sunday in a speech to Libyan engineers.

"The programs and equipment (to build a nuclear bomb) are known," he added.

It was the first time any Libyan official has confirmed that the north African country of more than five million had been trying to build a nuclear bomb.

What are the facts about how advanced Libya's nuke program was, where did they get their equipment and expertise, where did they get their URANIUM, etc.???? Couldn't be that they got any uranium from the neighbor to their southeast, NIGER??

You know, it frustrates the heck out of me that nobody in the Bush Administration ever uses the Libya "success story" in its defense in the War on Terror. IF NOTHING ELSE, toppling Saddam Hussein and getting Libya to abandon its nuclear weapons program (and uncovering A.Q. Kahn's [sp?] nuclear trading network) justifies our efforts to date on the W.O.T. The other successes (Afghanistan, Lebanon's embrace of democracy, isolating the PLO, pulling Pakistan into at least some cooperation in the W.O.T.) are other important accomplishments -- but the risk is if America doesn't show the will to stay the course. One crummy successor to Bush and all this accomplishment (and the related sacrifice) can and probably will be squandered.

Why doesn't the Bush Administration make this case?????!

I want to see the memo from Joe Wilsons office requesting Valerie Plame to Investigate! I think Dan Rather should forge one immediately!!!

Agreed, this all frustrates me to no end - I cannot comprehend why the administration is so silent about this great success story unless they have some great secrets to preserve about how far along Libya really got (maybe VERY close) or what their sources were, who helped us to crack the case, etc. I would think that by now a lot of the Libya story could be told publicly, but maybe we made secrecy commitments to other governments, intel agencies, etc.

Rich Miniter claimed in his book "25 myths in the war on terror" that Libya was hosting Saddams nuclear program, with Iraqi scientist in Libya building nukes.

There are some who believe that Libya's WMD programs were really Saddam's WMD programs, in particular the nuclear weapons program. No wonder Kay and Blix couldn't find the nukes, they were looking in the wrong place! Clues would be if it can be confirmed that many of the WMD scientists and technicians were Iraqis, and if the technique used in Libya for Uranium enrichment somehow involves "plasma" as documented in the now public captured Iraqi papers and tapes. If true, then case closed- Bush vindicated, Liberals debunked, and the West saved.

This is the reason I no longer loudly defend the Bush Administration's original reason for going into Iraq -- to destroy Saddam's WMD program and to keep these weapons out of the hands of international terrorist groups. If the Bush Adm. won't defend itself and it's policies, why should I?

Ping! Gadaffi confirms that Libya's nuke program was very far along - he may be boasting to try to assert Libya's economic and technical prowess, but still I don't think he'd say this if it weren't substantially true and known to the US and UK (because otherwise it could ignite a new round of inquiries if the USA had thought his nuke program weren't so advanced).

So all the questions of how Libya obtained equipment, technology, expertise, and URANIUM still need to be explained in a lot more detail. Why won't the administration cite this more as a dramatic success story in the WOT??

Any mention that Libya was using Iraqi scientists in its nuclear weapon development program?

The President mentioned Libya in a June 28, 2005 speech regarding Iraq and the WOT in general.

"Before our coalition liberated Iraq, Libya was secretly pursuing nuclear weapons. Today the leader of Libya has given up his chemical and nuclear weapons programs."

However, the President should reiterate this success from time to time as well (since the media won't). And especially since most folks aren't familiar with this story.

Yes, that's what I've suspected strongly from the start, and there have been various articles suggesting that in various ways, but why won't the Bush WH confirm it and why can't the public get any real info??? Did we have to promise confidentiality to other intel agencies such as MI6, or why on earth will the Bush WH not defend itself with what would obviously be such enormously important info???????

"Rich Miniter claimed in his book "25 myths in the war on terror" that Libya was hosting Saddams nuclear program, with Iraqi scientist in Libya building nukes."

That's what I have suspected from the moment Gadaffi cracked in 2003, but why on earth won't the US administration tell this great and important success story?? And what has happened to all those scientists and engineers???? We have allowed our credibility in the world to be savaged by lying MSM scumbags, and this is exactly the kind of fact pattern that would answer the lying critics (even if they would shut their eyes and ears) - why won't we tell the US public and the world what really happened there?

Because when they did over a period of time, nobody gave them credit where credit was due. With all the focus on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Libyian story took second place at best for that short period of time it was even exposure.

"The programs and equipment (to build a nuclear bomb) are known," he added.

Something those who wish to stop Iran and N Kor or any other country might reflect on.

Their puppetiers don't want a show of too much conservative successes because it isn't in their interests.
