Remembering the Forgotten Mechanic..

Thanks so much for this, Lori. I've saved it. It is so important to remember all the people it takes to make things work right.

I just find it a little odd that the betrayal of the nation with calls for appeasement, negotiations, and withdrawal after successful military operations; both then and now involved a prominent politician from Massachusetts.

Is there something in the water up there???

Greetings Canteeners, after a fun day of rasslin RR Ties it nice to be able to sit down and post the Saturday Sortie. We will wrap up our brief excursion through Britiah WW-II aircraft tonight with a mixed bag of WW-II British aircraft. So on with the pics already.

First up tonite we have the Fairy Swordfish, also known affectionately as " The Stringbag" The Swordfish served the British Fleet Air Arm through out WW-II and as best as I can tell it was the only bi-plane to serve the entire length of WW-II in a front line capacity. With a top speed of a galloping 138mph the Swordfish was no threat to run away from anybody, except maybe a Piper Cub. However it was very manuverable and on the deck was more than a match for enemy fighters. The Swordfish had two high points in WW-II, the crippling of the Italian fleet at Taranto in November of 1940 and the crippling of the battleship Bismark in May of 1941.

Next up the Bristol Beaufort. Developed from the Bristol Blenheim light bomber the Beaufort was a twin engined torpedo bombe witha four man crew. The Beauforet was used in the Mediterranean theater and the Aussies used it quite a bit as well. In other theaters the Beaufort made its mark as a mine layer. But the best thing about the Beaufort ias that it servced as the basis for the Beaufighter :-)

Next up would be the Bristol Beaufighter. used by the RAF as a day fighter and a night fighter the Beau came into it's own as a srtike fighter. The Mk X model was capable of toting 4 20mm canons in the nose as well as 8 Rockets or a pair of 1000lb bombs. I don't have any good color pics of the Beaufighter but I do have a cool painting.

Last but not least I have the Gloster Gladiator. The Gladiator was the last bi-plane fighter to be used by the RAF and two squadrons went to France where they were not a success.. The people of Malta came to rely on a trio of Gladiators in the begining of the war to help fight off the Italian AIr Forces. Named Faith, Hope and Charity the Gladiators were able to hold out until A squadron of Hurricanes was available in Juy of 1940.

Here is a shot of a Gladiator in a loop, I think, showing off two of the four .303 machine guns that it carried.

And to close out tonights adventure here is a pic of a Galdiator in company with a Hawker product. Anybody care to guess as to the model of the Hawker. No prize but you will get a nice warm fuzzy feeling for getting it right :-)

Y'all have a great week and we will see you next weekend.

Regards
