Remembering Beruit the Last Time
yah
Beirut.
I recall standing on the flight deck ot the Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), while we "showed the flag" by making a close pass to the beach. We could see them firing mortars in the hills, and the rounds exploding on Marine positions at the airport. Our only port call that cruise was interrupted 2 days after we anchored in Naples by the attack on the Marine barracks. We got underway immediately and stayed underway until we were relieved.
We spent so much time off of the coast of Lebanon after the Marines were hit, covering and supporting rescue ops, we called the area "Be-No Station"; because there be no Liberty, mail, fresh milk, Liberty, lettuce, Mail, etc...
All things considered, it was the worst cruise I ever made.
