Lamont pulls even with Lieberman in latest poll

July 20, 2006

HAMDEN, Conn. --Democratic challenger Ned Lamont has pulled into a dead heat in his U.S. Senate race with incumbent Joe Lieberman, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

The poll shows Lamont ahead 51-47 percent among likely voters in the Aug. 8 Democratic primary. That compares to a 55-40 percent lead for Lieberman in a similar poll in June.

The telephone survey of 2,502 registered voters was conducted July 13-18. It has a sampling error margin of about 2 percentage points. But error margin among the 653 likely Democratic primary voters is 3.8 percentage points, putting the candidates in a statistical dead heat.

If the DNC were a car, it'd turn only left, and after going in circles, it'd crash.

If Lieberman looses, it will make the RATS look even more out of touch with the mainstream voter. Lieberman is still generally a liberal, but he is like Scoop Jackson on National Defense, and should be respected for that. If RATS can't respect their own that demonstrate the courage of their convictions. A POX on their house.

LIEberman is only strong on defense if it helps Israel.

I'm enjoying his misery, since I'll not forget how he was complicit in the plan to discount the military votes in Florida.

So if Lieberman runs as an independent, he may still vote with the rats, but his official independent status will effect the percentage of seats+staff on committees.

What a pathetic party. We've handed them so many golden opportunities over the years and every single time they manage to ham them up. Its amateur hour politics. To be honest I wish they were a little more competent. Were they not so moonbatish I think our own reps would have to be more responsive on things like spending and the borders and the base wouldn't be taken for granted so often. But I guess you only play to your level of competition.

From what I've read, Lieberman will win, even if he doesn't run as a Democrat. So then we'd have two Independents in the Senate, Jumpin' Jim and Lieberman.

Wonder where Lieberman's loyalties will lie once he gets thrown aside by the Dems?

Jumpin' Jim abandoned the Republican party, but in Lieberman's case, it's the Party that's abandoning the man.

I heartily disagree.

That's what the polls say now, but if he loses the primary, he'll be severely damaged, and I expect his support will plummet.

"From what I've read, Lieberman will win, even if he doesn't run as a Democrat. So then we'd have two Independents in the Senate, Jumpin' Jim and Lieberman."

Jeffords is retiring, and the prohibitive favorite to replace him is another "independent," socialist Congressman Bernie Sanders.

If Lieberman loses the primary but wins reelection as an Independent, he will return to the Senate no longer bound by loyalty to his Senate caucus.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Lieberman the one who ticked off his party and his campaign by publically saying that the military ballots had to be accepted and counted?

It's been nearly six years now, so maybe it's just my memory that's faulty ... but I remember a lot of accusations from other Democrats about how his support for the inclusion of the military ballots undermined the Gore campaign.
