I would think they would have generator back-up especially since it happened before.

An April 19, 2006, NBC article linked from today's article was about a power outage in the San Diego radar control center. They had backup power, so they were only out for a few seconds. I find it hard to believe there isn't a similar system in Palmdale.

Also, although power usage is high due to weather, demand has not exceeded supply, nor have there been rolling blackouts this year.

NBC had an update on TV. They said it was unknown why the system did not switch to a backup system, so apparently there is the capability for power generation.

Also, some flights are allowed to land, just not nearly as many as usual, so anyone with a flight to catch should check the schedules.

I am here....no planes taking off.....this is the tracon going down...did see some local helos flying around.

One of 'em was NewsChopper 2. Did you see me?

Last time Palmdale went down they forgot to reboot the system remember?

Yep. This one looks like some sort of power outage that has affected the scopes. Then you've got to go to the strips and position reports. Tough situation. One Southwest 737 was holding short of the runway when the stop came out. They could be there a while...

As far as I know it's an unmaned facility.

All the personel were moved to Mirimar a few years ago and operate all the equipment remotly.

They created a work around last time.....if they keep the planes below a certain altitude, the local controllers can control the plane without handing off to LA Center.....

Small planes and helicopters also can fly, since they fly below a certain altitude.

I'm about 10 miles away from Palmdale and we haven't lost power. Today was the coolest of the last four days. I know that FAA facility has big-ass generators. Did they fail?
