Well-connected public figures report that they have been told recently by Rudolph Giuliani that, as of now, he intends to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
The former mayor of New York was on top of last month's national Gallup poll measuring presidential preferences by registered Republicans, with 29 percent. Sen. John McCain's 24 percent was second, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich third at 8 percent. National polls all year have shown Giuliani running either first or second to McCain, with the rest of the presidential possibilities far behind.
Republican insiders respond to these numbers by saying rank-and-file GOP voters will abandon Giuliani once they realize his position on abortion, gay rights and gun control. Party strategists calculate that if he actually runs, he must change on at least one of these issues.

Rudy is an inspiring speaker, right from the heart and there's no B.S.
Rudy would make a great Attorney General.
To split hairs: I think Nixon nominated Renquist for Justice. Reagan nominated him for Chief Justice.
Also, I think BOTH Roberts and Alito were stellar appointments. We dodged a bullet with Meirs, though.
Let's hope. I doubt it seriously, though.
Those quotes by Rudy Giuliani published by the NYObserver show what a political liberal he is and what a complete and utter jerkface he can really be in public. Giuliani isn't the type of politico that conservative Republicans should be backing for POTUS in 2008.
The GOP has many conservative choices available that would make solid candidates for the GOP nomination in 2008. FReepers shouldn't be selling out their conservative principles to see a liberal become POTUS.
Way way too early to offer a judgment on Bush`s picks of Alito or Roberts. History tells us so. Don't jump the shark. ;^)
Tell it like it is!
I'm tired of all this coalition building and compassionate conservatism. I'm tired of seeing stories in the local paper like how a nine passenger van has a blowout on the highway, flips and 17 illegal Mexicans go to the ER with serious injuries while the driver flees.......
I could go on a while.....
Uh, no not relaly. Bush won Virginia by 52%, and no most dems are not republicans in that state. Get your facts straight.
The only reason your upset about those comments is b/c they will sink rudy in the primary
The only reason you're upset is because I think Allen is a dork.
Calling the base the far right only shows your true moderate/liberal colors.
Whether anyone likes it, legal abortion has been the law of the land since the early 70's.
So I guess since then, you, and those who think like you, see no reason for the existence of the United States.
In your opinion, it only takes that we have a President who wishs abortion would go away and sleeps with a gun under his bed, and hates gays, that all will be well. Only under that circumstance will it worth defending the United States?
You really are a fool. The founders did not declare that the supreme court interprets the constituion and only a moderate/liberal would see it that way. It is called original intent for a reason.
" ... the supreme court interprets the constituion...."
They are a check.
I would definitely support Guiliani. But. His liberal positions on this or that would not bother me so much if I thought he could be counted on to continue appointing originalists.
I believe Mitt Romney also has great leadership qualities. He's sometimes slammed as a little bit false, i.e. politician-like. Who cares. He may have taken some liberal positions on this or that, but I definitely think he understands about originalism.
" Mr. Guiliani as US Atty for the St of NY indicted mobsters and won convictions in Court. These were mobsters who had $500 an hour lawyer types. That takes debating skill. There ain't no way on God's green earth that Allen can stand up to that."
Allen may be the nicest guy in the room, but, he lacks gravitas. Many times he looks and acts like a gawky teenager .
Physical presentation cannot be discounted-Bob Dole looked old , AlGore and Kerry looked like Frankenstein wannabes and Hillary looks like a gonad chomping, she demon from hell.
If Giuliani promises to appoint strict constructionists to the USSC in the likeness of John Roberts ( Giuliani praised Roberts to the hilt ),
takes a strong position on illegal immigration ( no amnesty , secures the border, etc),
fights for lower taxes and distinguishes between what he personally believes regarding gay marriage, gun control and PBA and what the majority of Americans desire, in addition to his position on the WOT-he would be unbeatable.
Giuliani / Allen, Giuliani/ Fred Thompson/ Giuliani/ John Kyl, Giuliani/ Hayworth are all combos that I would vote for in a heartbeat.
I'm not upset, i just think you need to get your facts straight.
No, they are not. You need to brush up your constitutional history and read up on the federalist papers.
I don't care if I get flamed, but Rudy is my first choice in the primary. He charismatic and a great leader. If he gets the Republican nomination, he will smoke whoever he runs against. Just my 2 cents worth. :-)
Lol, thats like saying if rudy changes every position he has and promises to be someone he hasn't been we'll accept him. No thanks, we'll take someone who has already proven himself.
Remember now, libs and moderates were screaming bush and reagan had no gravitas either and i think they turned out fine.
