Well-connected public figures report that they have been told recently by Rudolph Giuliani that, as of now, he intends to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
The former mayor of New York was on top of last month's national Gallup poll measuring presidential preferences by registered Republicans, with 29 percent. Sen. John McCain's 24 percent was second, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich third at 8 percent. National polls all year have shown Giuliani running either first or second to McCain, with the rest of the presidential possibilities far behind.
Republican insiders respond to these numbers by saying rank-and-file GOP voters will abandon Giuliani once they realize his position on abortion, gay rights and gun control. Party strategists calculate that if he actually runs, he must change on at least one of these issues.

Gingrich has a "wife" problem. And as a conservative female voter I wouldn't be able to rise up against it to pull the vote handle for him.
Yeah I know Guiliani has them too... but Guiliani's marriage was already over when he started to date his current wife.
Gingrich's wife at the time he committed the act was recovering from cancer.
If either one of these guys gets the GOP nomination in 2008, watch how quickly they go from "moderate" to "fascist" in the eyes of the media. By the time November of 2008 rolls around, they'd be so thoroughly re-cast by the media that we'll be sitting around here on FR wondering what the hell the GOP was thinking when they nominated such a miserable candidate.
I don't care if he changes his position on those issues or not, if he really cared about being on the right side of those issues he would not have supported the wrong side ever since he has been in public life. He can say he now opposes abortion and supports the 2nd Amendment all he wants, but we all know what his real beliefs are on those issues and that his heart would not be in supporting gun rights or in protecting life of unborn humans. Therefore he would have no personal commitment to eliminating or reducing either gun control or abortion, and the liberals would end up having their way on both issues.
The policy has to be uniform.
An illegal gets into an altercation. He's arrested.
If the city sends him to the INS what happens to his wife, also illegal, who is wondering where he is? Does she go to the Police? Do they arrest her too? If not, why not?
It is the height of BS to blame a big city Mayor- particularly of NYC- of not doing the job that is the responsibility of the Federal government.
If he ignores illegals when it is his responsibility, then no second term.
We agree then.
There were many rumors while Gingrich was in the house of his philandering. I really like him best where he is right now, writing articles, talking policy, out on the lecture circuit.
I wish he had been more honorable in his personal life. I could then easily support him for President.
This is what is ultimately going to destroy Giuliani's credibility as the best candidate to lead the so-called "war on terror." If Mohammed Atta and his fellow terrorists had been arrested on September 10th, 2001 for jumping a subway turnstile in New York City and it was learned that they had outstanding INS warrants for being in the U.S. on expired visas, the NYPD would have been prohibited -- under the policy that the Giuliani administration proudly maintained in direct violation of Federal law -- from turning them over to the INS.
When a candidate like this has such a miserable track record -- even on an issue that people insist is going to be one his greatest strengths!! -- you understand why so many of us recognize his presidential aspirations as a delusional pipe-dream.
I think the country needs a large man of rigorous physical stature in war time... a skinny, little liberal lawyer just don't make it real convincing...
You're right. The Media will call Giuliani a Fascist and they will even furnish proof.
And the proof should make Conservatives more supportive of him. The Media also called Reagan a Fascist.
Giuliani and McCain are "celebrity superstars". That won't vanish and it's a big plus. So big that in this country celebrities can even get away with murder.
I like Newt. He is a singular politicain that is very interesting when he speaks.
He is, unfortunately for him, the opposite of Giuliani in that he is also a celebrity. But his National celebrity status- undeserved- is that he is a bad guy.
He can never be elected.

I don't know, someone called Hannity to complain about how he fawns over McCain and Sean defended him (McCain)... made me sick to hear it.
If he runs, Newt is who I plan to vote for in the primary.
Most people just dont know about his history and his social positions. There are varyign levels of political knowledge. People like us freepers are probably know the most about the candidates and as such we know rudy's record, your average person involved in GOP activites knows a lot more than your average joe but not that detailed into the candidates like freepers.
I.e. When i went to various state gop functions and poked and ask around, less than a quarter of the people there really knew anything about rudy's liberalism. You'll see rudy supporters tout, oh but look how well he did, these people aren't as aware as most people think they are though.
It's hard not to like Hannity. His conservatism is something I don't question at all. But I also think he isn't the brightest bulb in the room.
You really are contorting yourself in a knot trying to cover Giuliani's @ss on this one. Contrary to what you've suggested here, the NYC policy was not uniform. New York's "sanctuary" policy differentiated between felonies and misdemeanors -- so the City would turn criminals over to the INS if they were arrested for felonies, but not for misdemeanors. In other words, the City wanted to deal with illegal immigrants in a manner that suited the city -- and only the city. If an illegal immigrant was picked up for a crime that could quickly be adjudicated in court and would likely end up with the perpetrator paying a fine and getting a suspended sentence, then they were perfectly willing to deal with him. But if it was a serious crime that would likely require a longer legal process (with a public defender, of course) and a lengthy prison sentence, then it suddenly became a priority to shuffle the perpetrator's @ss off onto the U.S. taxpayer.
It is the height of BS to blame a big city Mayor- particularly of NYC- of not doing the job that is the responsibility of the Federal government.
I agree with you 100%. That's why I don't criticize Giuliani for failing to have the NYPD function as an arm of the U.S. Department of Immigration & Naturalization Service. But I do contend that he ought to be sitting in a Federal prison right now for proudly and openly violating the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 even though that law had been upheld in the Federal courts every time it was challenged by the City of New York.
If he ignores illegals when it is his responsibility, then no second term.
I strongly suspect that if he ignores illegals when it is his responsibility, we can look forward to plenty of posts from you here on FR in 2012 in which you make lots of excuses for him.
Not likely, remember most indies love mccain because they think he spits all over the gop and the media tells them how wonderful he is. Once the media turns on mccain the dems and indies will turn on him too. Most dems don't know he is pro life and pro war. This girl i know loved mccain and is a big flaming lib. SHe said she'd vote for him. Then i told her about his pro life and pro war stances and she completely flipped and thinks hes just a warmongering attention whore.
Mark my words, the media will turn on mccain and he will sink in the polls. Rudy only has high polling now b/c hes not active politically, once he starts staking out positions dems and indies WILL turn on him, this is a fact most rudy and mccain fans fail to see.
Don't feed the neo confederate trolls.
McCain has a temper and may not have the disposition for the Presidency. Many people in SC have said that he lost it back in 2000.
I don't see how thats possible, the men even had facial hair in the opposite places.
