Where Is the Weapons Story?(Brent Bozell)
The Washington Times ^ | July 1, 2006 | L. Brent Bozell III

Posted on 07/01/2006 7:32:10 AM PDT by kellynla

While the Bush administration focuses on the elimination of the terrorist threat in Iraq, the Saddam-was-no-threat left has remained obsessed with the pre-war months, not only harping on the failures of Western intelligence, but more importantly, advancing a hardened historical narrative. They would have the world believe the Bush administration was not only wrong about the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but also lied intentionally and went to war for some unstated cynical reason -- oil, enriching war profiteers, avenging Daddy Bush.

To a large degree, they are succeeding with their revisionist history lesson, and the proof is in the pudding of the polls. Not only does a majority declare that the war wasn't worth the cost to our troops and our treasury, but a majority believes George W. Bush is not honest or trustworthy. When the USA Today-Gallup poll asked if the words "honest" and "trustworthy" applied to Mr. Bush in February of 2001, 64 percent said he was honest, while 29 percent said the words did not apply. By April of 2006, the numbers were 41 percent honest, 56 percent dishonest. It's an easy guess that a lot of that turnaround is our failure to find Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction.

So it was surprising to Sen. Rick Santorum, Pennsylvania Republican, and Rep. Peter Hoekstra, Michigan Republican, who were investigating whispers that weapons of mass destruction have actually been found by American troops in Iraq, to learn the rumors were true. After badgering administration officials for several months, the government gave the legislators a declassified memo stating that some 500 weapons of mass destruction have been found by coalition forces in Iraq, mostly sarin and mustard-gas agents, some of which "remain hazardous and potentially lethal."

Since according to the MSM & the Left, the WMD are "old and non-lethal", the naysayers like Alan Colmes wouldn't mind if we stored the 500 cannisters of WDM in their garage.

But the reception of this declassified memo shows we do not have an honest, nonpartisan news media, and political calculation is everything.

Nothing new there

They don't want to talk about it .. because then they would have to admit Bush was right

Better yet, I think they should stick their noses in it to confirm it is not.

Accd. to the drivebys, it's old stuff(the wmd's) and mostly harmless, but they don't want to get anywhere near it.

One of the drive-bys from the NYT was just on with Mark Simone on WABC and Simone asked him "if he would like some of those old wmd's in his back yard" and he(the guys from NYT) laughed it off.

They(the drive-bys) know they have been had but as usual are recreating the news --nothing new here.

We've got some old VX gas stored here in Indiana. Guess it'd be ok to just turn the place into a paintball range for the kiddies

Though intelligence gave no clear indication of what might be afoot, some intelligence reports mentioned chemical weapons, pointing toward work at a camp in southern Afghanistan called Derunta. On November 4, 1998, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York unsealed its indictment of Bin Ladin, charging him with conspiracy to attack U.S. defense installations. The indictment also charged that al Qaeda had allied itself with Sudan, Iran, and Hezbollah. The original sealed indictment had added that al Qaeda had “reached an understanding with the government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq.”109 This passage led Clarke, who for years had read intelligence reports on Iraqi-Sudanese cooperation on chemical weapons, to speculate to Berger that a large Iraqi presence at chemical facilities in Khartoum was “probably a direct result of the Iraq–Al Qida agreement.” Clarke added that VX precursor traces found near al Shifa were the “exact formula used by Iraq.”110This language about al Qaeda’s “understanding” with Iraq had been dropped, however, when a superseding indictment was filed in November 1998.

Your point is absolutely correct. These items remain lethal for a long, long time. The MSM and some folks in the Intel community are downplaying this for their own agendas. Naturally, Bush's critics pooh-poohed it from the beginning with weird comments about these items being pre-1991. Of course, Saddam said he had none of them. What's especially interesting is the total lack of curiosity by the MSM. This has been one state secret they've been eager to keep from the public despite all their constant claims about the publics right to know. It certainly rings all of that self-appointment hollow and shows us very well that the publics right to know that they do is fine if it aids terrorists but it's forbidden if it harms the hard Left's lies about Bush.

oh it's gotten to the point that we can't even watch Hannity & Colmes...
Colmes is constantly interrupting people who have a different position when they try to answer one of his questions...verrrrry annoying!

And Colmes' ignorance of the military, interrogation, war & WMD is inexcusable!

I think you should send Alan an email and suggest that - just to see what his reaction is .. LOL!! It should make for a good laugh.

But .. as far as the polls go .. please remember - the drive-by media has been using 11-14% MORE DEMOCRAT ADULTS in their polling. This means these people are not necessarily voters or even registered to vote. And it means - they can get whatever poll number they want to suit their agenda. Why are we not surprised?

I will get flamed for this but... no one in 2002 and 2003 argued that we should go to war because Iraq had 500, a 1000, chemical artillery shells. The argument was that Iraq was producing and creating delivery systems for a variety of lethal chemical and biological agents.Where are these now? Probably somewhere in Syria or the Bekaa, but not in Iraq.So the President has to bite the bullet and blame the intel, and he takes a huge hugh hit. He moves on with the mission, create an independent Iraq that is an obstacle to terror in the region, not an enabler. To start yelling about 500 155mm chem shells does not justify the war, it makes the President look desperate. That's why the info on these has been hard to come by. There's no PR value in them, and they are easily dismissed when compared to the descriptions by Rice and Rumsfeld and Powell of what we believed to be in Iraq. Bush is right to emphasize the mission we're involved with now.

"I think you should send Alan an email"

I wouldn't waste my time...
I'm sure Colmes could care less what I think of his rudeness and/or of his lack of debating skills.

"even registered to vote"

in CA, we have Motor Voter and as B-1 Bob Dornan exposed years ago in his loss to Loretta Sanchez, there are LOTS OF ILLEGALS VOTING!(you don't even have to show I.D. to vote!)

Most important observation.  This is why we have to address and counter each BS claim by Democrats and old media as they attempt to minimize events and history.  If we don't respond the lie becomes true to too many voters who don't know what's being done to them.

Have you read Richard Miniter's book, "Disinformation"?

National Security & Defense

WMDs Found in Iraq
Posted Nov 09, 2005

Contrary to ongoing reports by mainstream media outlets, WMDs have been found in Iraq, so reports New York Times best-selling author Richard Miniter in his new book, Disinformation.

Consider these shocking facts:

• Found: 1.77 metric tons of enriched uranium

• Found: 1,500 gallons of chemical weapons

• Found: Roadside bomb loaded with sarin gas

• Found: 1,000 radioactive materials--ideal for radioactive dirty bombs

• Found: 17 chemical warheads--some containing cyclosarin, a nerve agent five times more powerful than sarin

This is only a partial list of the deadly weapons Miniter reveals in his new book, Disinformation. Miniter systematically dissects the "No-WMD Myth" (how it started, and why it continues), as well as 21 other War-on-Terror myths perpetuated by the media.
