Though few voters are expected to turn out for today's primary election, how they vote in the 3rd District Congressional race is being watched nationwide as a so-called referendum on immigration reform.
In several debates, incumbent Chris Cannon and political novice John Jacob have discussed little beyond immigration. They agree many of the problems facing the nation, from terrorism to quality public education, are rooted in its border security policies.
Cannon has been targeted by anti-illegal immigration groups as being part of a pro-business Republican bloc that is working with the president to pass a soft approach to immigration reform.
As a result of this immigration anxiety that has reached into the nation's heartland, a normally safe five-term Republican congressman is in a tough race with a political neophyte. "I could lose this," Cannon concedes.
Cannon says he leans toward an immigration solution that allows undocumented workers to pay a fine and be allowed to return to their jobs as temporary workers.
Jacob, who calls himself a problem solver, admits he has yet to develop a plan for immigration reform. "I can't give you those details because I don't have them yet."
Political observers say the outcome will be decided by how many Utahns turn up at the polls. A small turnout could benefit Jacob.
Utah pollster Dan Jones says calling this primary comes down to determining who of the few will actually vote. "That is the key. It really, really does come down to turnout," he says.
Since the primaries were moved from September to June and Utah Republican Party leaders closed their races to anyone but registered Republicans, turnout has plummeted. In 2000, just over 15 percent of registered voters in Salt Lake County cast ballots in the primary. Two years later, with the GOP primary closed, turnout was 6.7 percent.
I don't know how this will turn out.
People are trying to crucify Jacob over the Satan comment. Not sure how effective that will be in Utah though.
Realistically, the truth is that a five time Republican incumbent should not be in a fight for his political life in a very conservative district. The fact Cannon is speaks volumes no matter the outcome.
However, D.C. critters will dismiss this election if Cannon wins. They may pause for a few seconds if it's close, but clearly the best outcome to send a message is for Jacobs to win. Second best outcome is to be very close.
I'm praying for Jacobs to pull it out, it would be a huge upset so I'm trying to keep my expectations down...but...prayers are going up. It's in the voters and God's hands now.
Notice I pinged spiff, unlike himself who seems to cower in being truthful.
I'm not certain it can be predicted what Cannon would do, but I know this.
Specter is now talking about Enforcement First, Captain's Quarters remarks on it.
Of course his idea of enforcement first is having the President authorize certain benchmarks have been made at the border and in employment. I'm going to turn down that recommendation given the President's track record on this issue.
But the fact a Senator like Specter that voted against Enforcement First is now bending demonstrates measurable success in our pressure against the House of Lords.
To whom are you praying, Jacob's "god" satan, after all Jacob admitted that satan is more powereful than Jesus(i.e satan was influencing Jacob's campaign).
Hey Dane,
Get your seatbelt on... today is the day we have all waited for.
Hey, Wolfstar, can you correct Dane on this one. I'm a little busy right now.
ping
Spiff,
Ain't it great to be a legal American Citizen?
Demrocacy is now in play in the State of Utah. We'll have to see what it turns out!
Yep and you all will be silent after tonights results are announced and slink away from FR, like the snakes you all are.
Now Dane I don't name call you. Lighten up.
The sun will rise tommorrow and we will all go on with our lives either way
Please, it's what 12:20 PM and spiff posts a self-deprecaating remark from Chris Cannon and announcing victory, especially from a newspaper(Salt Lake City Tribune) that had a poll with some subsections that had a 9% margin of error(i.e junk poll).
JMO, spiff's tactics remind me of Zogby's when he released his poll that Kerry was going to win at 5:30 PM on election day 2004.
If spiff wants to follow Zogby, that's up to him.
Was there anything inaccurate about what Spiff posted, Dane?
If Cannon is pro-amnesty he needs to find another job...the same goes for all pro-amnesty pols.
Yes, in a carvillain-clintonian type of way.
spiffy proclaims a remark of what Chris Cannon said in a quote from a newspaper, that Chris Cannon may lose, as proof that he will lose, while anybody with a lick of common sense(spiff excluded) knows that no politician is going to declare victory before the votes are counted.
But what the hey, dirty, demonize me for showing spiffy's clintonian/carvillian tactics.
How is it demonizing you to ask you to show what Spiff posted was somehow inaccurate? You sure are quick with the personal attacks today, Dane.
Where did Spiff say this was proof he will lose? You are making attacks without backing them up.
Uh the title of this thread in parenthesis.
OOps, I forgot you have trouble with reading comprehension, nevermind.
Wjat has that got to do with me? In all my debates with you, I have NEVER called you a name. You called me a snake. That is name calling and you should know better...especially on this site.
I happen to believe Cannon has a great conservative voting record, with the exception of his immigration related voting record.
And this race was forced into a runnoff because of his immigration voting record.
Unfortunately for Cannon, IMMIGRATION IS THE ISSUE THIS ELECTION and propably in 2008.
The Citizens of UTAH are now deciding what message they want to send.
And we shall soon see what that message is.
We can have a civil debate without name calling.
You know I've noticed that too, Dane must be really quivering in those boots and pulling his hair out at the thought Cannon just might deservedly lose today.
Uh the title of this thread in parenthesis.
OK, let's look at what is in parens:
(Cannon admits he may lose)
Not will lose. May lose.
OOps, I forgot you have trouble with reading comprehension, nevermind.
Dane, look in the mirror. Assuming, of course, that you can see your own reflection, which I'm beginning to wonder about.
