There is another thread here on FR (which I can't find at the moment^TM) covering some bacteria grown in a stainless steel vat or tank or whatnot, where the temperature was systematically and regularly increased by so and so much a day for so many days.

They tracked mutations in the microbes which rendered them more successful at the higher temperatures.

They then started with a brand new unmutated batch of critters and did it again. Same mutations cropped up.
