An Al Qaeda Leader in Iraq Killed...Anyone Have Any Information?

Posted on 06/20/2006 9:56:45 AM PDT by MikeA

Sorry about the vanity, but Limbaugh was mentioning a top Al Qaeda leader, some sub-human named Sheikh Mansour who apparently is in the top 5 of AL Qaeda's Iraq leadership has been killed in Iraq while trying to flee a dragnet on his safehouse. I've search Google, Fox News.com and even CNN.com and found nothing. Of course I guess the MSM doesn't want to have to mix any good news from Iraq with the bad news about the captured soldiers being found dead. They need to maintain a day of total demoralization about the mission in Iraq without giving us any reason for hope. But does anyone have any information or a link to a story about this?

By the way, Limbaugh mentioned Free Republic wondering why the idiot KOS convention got such media attention, including 7 reporters from the New York Times being sent to the Vegas mental illness confab. Can you imagine the New York Times even giving 2 seconds worth of attention to a Freeper convention?

If they included the words Right Wing extremists, bigoted, homophobes, in their story, then maybe......

CENTCOM announced minutes ago that one of the men expected to take the place of the now-room temperature Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has also reached thermal equilibrium near Baghdad. The spokesman for the military briefed reporters on the death of Sheikh Mansur, displaying before and after mug shots of the dead terrorist and explained his significance to the insurgent network in Iraq. So far, none of the wire services have picked up the story; I will fill in the details as they become available.

UPDATE: The BBC has an addendum to the story on the discovery of the two bodies that reports up to 15 insurgents killed while hunting a "senior member of al-Qaeda in Iraq," but does not identify Sheikh Mansur despite the specifics in the briefing.

UPDATE II: The Commissar asks if I may have mistranscribed the name from al-Masri or al-Mohajer. I took the name from the placard at the briefing, but it still might be the same person, as terrorists have been known to adopt multiple identities. I'm waiting for better reporting to come from the morning briefing, and find it disappointing that the story has not made its own way onto the wires thus far. Still scanning ...

UPDATE III: CENTCOM now has a release stating that they have detained a senior AQI leader and three of his lieutenants near Baghdad. CENTCOM has not named the terrorists detained as yet.

UPDATE IV: Thanks to CQ reader Brendan F, we see that the BBC has updated their report:

Gen Caldwell said on Tuesday US forces had killed Zarqawi's "right-hand man" in a raid in Yusifiya on Friday, near where the US troops were abducted.
The general said Iraqi Mansur Suleiman al-Mashhadani was "a key leader in al-Qaeda" and could have succeeded Zarqawi.

So now we have mainstream media confirmation on the kill -- and it appears we also have another senior AQI leader detained. It may take some time to get the information clear about the later CENTCOM release.

...Qaeda's Iraq leadership has been killed in Iraq...

I see this as a great step forward in bi-partianship in our Iraqi policy. The right want terrorists our of business, the left does not want them being held as prisoners of war. Killing them on the spot should make everyone happy!

They do, that is how Scott Shane from New York Times interviewed me regarding the Iraqi documents.

While you were posting this - I was GOOGLING for info.

I saw it on FOX & Friends this morning - the report direct from Iraq along with photos - the leading al Qaeda imam - showing his very dead face.

Now I can't even find mention on FOX news site - or anywhere else???

Is the media waiting for HIS next of kin to be notified - (she says sarcastically)

This news comes at the same time as the news of what these barbarians did too two of our brave men. Why is it being spiked? Is it because it will give the American people some sort of "yes!"

Gee, I hope we don't TORTURE the one we have captured. Or listen in on his phone calls.

Mashhadani was one of the top five al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders and close to its mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was also killed by a US air strike on June 7.

"He was a right-hand man to Zarqawi," Gen. Caldwell said.

US forces had spotted Mashhadani and two other militants in a car in the Yusufiya area south of Baghdad.

His vehicle was destroyed from the air as he tried to get away.

Two US soldiers went missing at dusk Friday in the same area.

A group affiliated with al-Qaeda said it had abducted the soldiers but Gen. Caldwell dismissed the claim, saying the military had no evidence to suggest that.

Mashhadani had previously been captured by US troops and then released in 2004.

More proof that we should not be releasing anyone. Just line them up and shoot them.

Seems that Saddam's little trial has taught us that dirt naps are the order of the day ... he should have never come out of that little hole in the ground alive.

"Gee, I hope we don't TORTURE the one we have captured. Or listen in on his phone calls."

If the RATs had their way, our soldiers would have to read the captured terrorist jihadi their "Miranda" rights. The RATs want to protect the "rights" of terrorists and criminals at the expense of the innocent victims.

I think there have been a convention or two. I don't know the details. I'm not aware of any planned in the future. I was speaking hypothetically.
