Turning the Tables on Abusive Tort Lawyers

At long last, there's good news in the fight against "jackpot justice" tort claims and the nefarious law firms that file them. In courts and legislatures across the country, fraudulent lawsuits are being exposed, and the abusive tort lawyers that file them are finally getting a taste of their own medicine.

Most notable is the recent indictment of Milberg Weiss Bershad & Schulman, the nation's most notorious class-action law firm. For four decades, Milberg Weiss has filed hundreds of dubious class-action lawsuits and wrung billions of dollars from terrified companies.

Now, a federal grand jury in Los Angeles has indicted Milberg Weiss and individual partners on multiple counts of conspiracy, racketeering, obstruction of justice, mail fraud, money laundering and filing false tax returns.

Short of terrorists and child molesters, there is nobody I hate more than the pirates of the Bar. This is excellent news and I hope for many, many, many more indictments.

From what I know of lawyers, this country would be best served by throwing the worst 10% in prison, keeping the best 10%, and putting 80% of them on the street to seek honest work.

If there is ever real tort reform, our GNP might increase substantially.

Irony: When a class-action lawsuit gets filed against class-action lawyers. Hopefully coming to a courtroom near you soon. And it couldn't happen to a "nicer" bunch of guys.

Stories like this make me want to quote Shakespeare.

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers!"

Yes, and the blameless doctors whose lives and careers he ruined with junk science and emotional play-acting. I hope they get their justice tenfold on the dirty scum-sucking money-grubbing filthy lying vulture.

Well I never had much hope that we would see meaningful tort reform in this country, and I still have my doubts that this is nothing more than a couple of encouraging, isolated incidents. As an EyeGuy, I am a plump, well-insured target for these cowardly vultures.

Among the biggest beneficiaries of these suits are OTHER LAWYERS. After all, someone has to defend the parties that are attacked in these cases. Thus, we can't expect much policing from the profession itself, except in the most egregiously criminal instances of abuse.

More importantly, tort reform must be initiated in our legislatures, which are depressingly dominated of course, by career politicians whose profession almost invariably is -- sigh -- law.

Our country would benefit greatly from a more occupationally diverse legislature, and I am convinced that if that were the case, some of our finest statesmen would be individuals without even a college degree.

I read somewhere that this firm had given something like $6 million to dems and $6,000 to Republicans. Not quite those figures, but a very wide spread for their donations. BWHAHAHAHA! Wonder when the dems will be returning those funds. Waiting. . . waiting. . . waiting. . . got to eat dinner . . . waiting. . .

Everybody hates tort lawyers because they misuse and abuse the courts in order to extort billions of dollars from peopel and companies each year. Shakespeare was right; first, we kill the lawyers.

I was glad to see this article. Just last week, I got a notice from a law firm saying that I was a plaintiff in a class action suit. It's a nonsense suit against a "big bucks" corp.
I'd much rather be a plaintiff in a suit against a law firm that uses my name this way. I never agreed to such a thing.

Fear of lawsuit seriously hamstrings the development of new products. It should be totally unnecessary to have to hire lawyers for the research department.

You got it. And I bet I know how long you have been retired. :-)

In the earlier days, the lawyers would send me letters asking for money if I wanted to be included. (I was amazed at the number of people who actually paid!)
But this one really annoyed me. How dare they presume!
