I came across this chart while searching the net over the weekend. I think it's about the most effective rebuttal to the Global Warming hysterics that I've ever come across.

We should just call it what it is: Global Hysteria.

Hmmm, judging by your chart and the extreme dip in temperatures in the Carboniferous period looking a LOT like the dip in the Tertiary period, does this mean dinosaurs are going to make a comeback? The age of the dinosaur started in the Triassic.

Gee, when viewed in its proper context in this chart, it is obvious that Average Global Temperature is slowly but steadily declining (Global Cooling!!!), which is what you would naturally expect given that the Earth's only heat source, the Sun, also has a steadily declining average temperature.

Here's another one that goes back a little further:

One of the things you notice right off the bat is that we're in one of the coolest periods of the last three-quarters of a billion years or so. And these cool periods are always very short-lived. In other words, the earth's temperature appears to be inherently unstable at these cool temps. So don't expect it to remain at these levels long.

For most of the earth's history during the last 750 million years or so it's been much, much warmer. Up to 10 degrees celsius warmer (about 18 degrees fahrenheit...ouch!). And it's stable at those high levels, sometimes remaining there for up to 100 million years at a time and beyond.

It is NOT hysteria! The threat of another Ice Age is REAL and your chart is evidence!!!

Looks like we've been in a real decline in temperature for the last thirty years or so - confirms what I remember reading in Time Magazine back in the 70's - that we're headed for another ice age......

You might want to copy these three charts as well:

in order to relate these charts with yours the global average temperature for 2001 is calculated at 14.52 degrees Celsius

This reminds me of a documentary shown ~10 years ago. In it, the featured scientist (as I recall it was a woman), was pointing out that the earth is currently in an Ice Age (defined as a period with Ice at the poles). She also pointed out that Ice Ages are an abnormal occurrence on earth, and are not a stable state.

Most interesting, as I recall, was that she pointed out how much CO2 was being dumped from the dissolving of the limestone in the Himalayas and the Chinese Steps. I don't recall the numbers, but the amount of CO2 was very large. She opined that recent geological activity was the cause, and that there was no effective way to stop it. There was also a short blurb implying that earth would be much more habitable when the Ice Age concludes.

If anyone recalls the name, etc. of this documentary, I would very much enjoy the opportunity to see it again.

What really scares me is that Gore has the worst timing of anyone I have ever seen. Whenver he comes out and says something, the opposite always occurs.

Given this, I'm scared that Al Gore is the sign that an ice age is about to happen.
