Why try to figure out where the language came from, it says in the Bible that it comes from the tower of Babel around 5000 years ago. Any other explanation is heresy, and the purveyor of that heresy should be burned at the stake.
Not quite. We christians are not the benighted morons you paint us to be. We are quite open to intellectual inquiry, but this usually results in name calling from the opposition. If you still don't feel comfortable, go take up the argument with some of our Islamicist friends.
Now to the issue: Linguists have identifed at least 19 distinct language families, many of which are over-simplifications. The 'confusing of language' in Genesis 11 does explain why there are so many language families from which the 4500 or so living languages have descended. ([Mono]Genesis+Babel)
Evolutionists might argue for polygenesis--language being invented many times by many people. But then "simple" monogenesis is challenging enough. One expert in the area puts forth ten (!) or so untestable hypotheses for language genesis: The Origins of Language.
Enjoy.
