If there was a machine to do it economically it would already be made.
That's not true. As long as the cheapest alternative is human labor, the inventors and developers will work on something else. This was impressed on me when I was in Korea and saw gate guards for railroad crossings and three-man shovels.
Its not that machines are uneconomical or infeasible, the human labor cost is being depressed. Think of it as dumping. Higher labor costs and the market's move to alternatives is being prevented by the Mexican government dumping its low cost - low value workers on the US. And perhaps some of the distortion this causes isn't good for the economy. If a produce grower can't get labor at the cost the market is willing to pay, perhaps that particular prorduce isn't really valued by the market.
There is experience in Florida agriculture where increased mechanization has started.
For the politicians, it all boils down to pandering to the largest and fastest growing minority, the Hispanic vote and placating business interests to keep their contributions flowing into their campaigns. Lindsay Graham said as much.
Your analysis is good, too..
Since Economic activity that SHOULD be done (i.e. Like building a house this summer) will have to wait until the available labor can get to it, people start restricting their activits. Decreaseing activity enough and you get recession. (EXMP, If I have to wait 6 months for them to start on my house, guess I will just stay here instead)
1st Rule of Economics everyone should be made to learn. There is NO free lunch. EVERYthing comes with costs as well as benefits. As soon as anyone starts telling you their idea is all gain and no pain, or what we are doing now is all pain and no gain, you know they are lying to you.
I have just realised why Kristol irritates me because he reminds me so much of what we call Conservative wets in Britain, thanks for using that term in reference to Kristol.
Great Post Fish. Sounds like these "civilians" were terrorists or terrorist families and the Marines are being set-up.
The Rats are trying to shame our soldiers just like they did with the "scarwall" of Vietnam. They say they support the troops for political gain, but this is their support.
Pray for W and Our Framed Marines
Indeed so. And that is the last thing Republicans need.
I lke the term effete to describe Kristol. That and sour grapes..
It is going to take years to secure our borders and to establish the bureaucratic machinery to enforce our immigration laws, today's and what may come out of Congress. The idea that suddenly the 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants will be forced out of their jobs and leave the country is just hyperbole. We will have plenty of time to adjust. It won't cause a Recession as much as some of the scaremongers would like you to believe.
Snugs,
Do you know where the term (i.e. "wet") came from?
Jimmah Carter thinks that we should put the Gitmo prisoners on trial or release them. He believes that we should talk directly to Iran. He thinks they will agree to use nuclear power only for peaceful purposes and will submit to oversight.
Neat summary. Thanks, Bah.
Great point, and getting to real solutions. We can argue all the national and international issues here on FR but the most important thing to keep in mind is electing local politicians and dealing with local issues that impact our lives a lot more.
Getting more conservatives on school boards, into towns and city positions etc. creates a better bench of talent to draw from for future elections.
Will they have to change it to Facelift the Nation??
Pray for W and Our Troops
Definitely sour grapes he is still smarting that he has not got a job in the administration
I subscribe to the general theory that Kristol is the way he is these days because he wasnt offered a job with the Bush admin..
